starting an engine that has been on vacation
 

ok so i have an engine from japan (20b to be exact) that will be going in my car in the not so distant future hopefully... anyway, this thing hasnt been started for a long long time..... im using it stock, with the stock twins.... besides changing the oil what else should i do (to the motor, or turbos) before trying to crank it up? does any sort of break in time apply since its been sitting for so long? thanks guys, heath

Well, you didn't ask for my opinion on this but you are going to get it.

From everything that I have read the 20B cosmo came inadequately ported from the factory. The stock turbos are small and inefficient, and there is no real way of knowing how many miles a used 20B engine shipped crate from Japan has on it.

Have you gotten a compression check on all three rotors?

You really should consider doing a rebuilt before you install it. This way you know that the engine is up to spec and you shouldn't (crossing fingers) have to pull it for a rebuilt soon.

At the very least you will need to add some ATF to the combustion chamber to help with lubrication since the engine has been sitting for god knows how long.

well im definatly going to be running the 20b stock for now.... i dont mind pulling it again when i decide that i need an obscene amount of power.... but as of now i just want to get it mounted and running stock... that will be an acomplishment in itself for me cause really, i have no idea what im doing :wink: ...well i do but its definatly going to be hard.

anyway, ATF you say?? thats it? then crank it up? the front clip had 70,000 kilometers on it BTW

Yep, oil or ATF in the spark plug holes, spin the engine over to coat everything. Change our your front and rear crank seals before installing it too (they tend to dry out and leak). That's about it.

anyone ever clean out the carbon on old engines before restarting them? i remember an old post where someone scrubbed the innerds with some steel wool and such from the exhaust ports and supposedly freed much of the carbon, as well as regaining his lost compression my "working in" (i think w/ atf or some other cleaner) some carbon locked apex seals with a pencil.... he claimed it worked great..... anyone ever bother with this?
