Spoiler Installation
 

Do you guys install your own spoilers, or leave it up to the professionals? I don't see it being a tough job, but i am a little aprehensive about drilling holes in my hatch.
Any tips would be appreciated.

me and my dad id it ourselves...just take the inside hatch off, it's pretty easy. Measure it, draw a templet if you want...what we did was put screws into the spoiler and put chalk at the end, then we set the wing at the desired position and we used the chalk dots as drilling points. You just have to size it up well. Hope this helps...oh and make sure you use some kind of sealent so water doesn't go in

Put masking tape on the hatch where needed ,set spoiler and mark the holes on the tape , drill through the tape and hatch . You did remove the in side trim ? Put sealer around the holes, bolts . yes you know to pull the tape off, some one would have said that.

ok finally got it painted. it is a 96-98 spoiler BTW. it has small white plastic "fasteners" near the rear of the spoiler (like they are meant to help hold the spoiler to the hatch, in addition to 4 studs.) does that make sense?

ok, so can I cut those off and still have the spoiler attached properly? or should I drill yet more holes in my hatch, and make more potential spots for rust to develop (not a serious concern, but one nonetheless.)

Has anyone else noticed that it's a royal PITA to bolt the spoiler back on? I had to fight with the damn thing for like a half hour just to get all for bolts back in. Is there an easier way? My spoiler is pretty faded, but I took it off originally to fix a leak, and now I'd like to be able to get it off prior to having the car painted, and be able to put it back on easier.

I installed the spoiler myself. I mounted the spoiler to a piece of cardboard and made that the template. I was lucky that my brother has an RX-7 with a spoiler already so it was easy to find the right spot for it.

As far as the plastic fasteners, mine were broken when I got the spoiler. I pulled those out and put some studs in. The hardest part putting the nuts on when it was on the car.

What I will do if I ever take it off again is drill some holes from the top, so they will lineup, through the inner panel of the hatch so I could put the nuts straight on. Those would end up being covered by the plastic interior piece.

I think the newer spoiler has the same hole pattern as the old one.

I bought my spoiler from Mazda $525.00 ouch, but it comes with a template for it. Its not a bad job, just have a few beers, relax and have a friend for moral support if you fuck it up..heehehee......Make you once you have it lined up where you want it that you use a center punch so you don't walk the bit across your hatch....good luck

I have the same wing and it looks like its gonna be a bitch to install in my case because I have the '93-on rear wing and the holes do Not match up at all !! Not mentioning that I will have 2 holes on each "far side" from the old wing that will need to be sealed up. Anyone else have this problem ??

I thought you already did your new spoiler? Are you changing?

look at the date :)

One thing to make sure of, is to start out with a small drill bit and work your way up to the right size. If you don't you could end up having dents where you drilled. I know from experience.

it went pretty well. Just be sure to measure a couple of times to make sure it is right. start with a small drill bit to make sure everything stays centered. then slap the thing on. nothing to it.:)
