You are correct. That is not a Spirit R. However, it is not Aristo's car either. His car is silver. NOT Titanium Grey. Although, it may be the car that Mazda North America mocked up for display.

Aristo's car also doesn't have the 99 wing, 99 sidemarkers, or spirit r badges.

This may be a dumb question, but did you sell you're blue RX and buy a white one?

I sold my blue rx7 and have been casually looking for a Chaste White rx7, but probably won't make any purchases for a year or two.

That could be a spirit R still. Add designers sometimes use a adobe command called "flip horizontal" to get a better angle they desire on an image.

LOL, I was going to make that point.

FWIW the Spirit R emblem would be backwards though I'm sure they could have edited that too.

Look at where the windshield wipers extend from....

dgeesaman 04-29-06 06:12 PM

Yeah, I was just thinking about the windshield wipers too.

I have to agree 100%. It's likely been flipped. There is no real distinguishing factor that can prove either way. The wipers are even switched around when going from a LHD to RHD car.

Either way, I have to agree, seeing the RX-7 in NEW ads always makes me happy. Meguiar's still puts it on their bottles and stuff IIRC.

Edit: Missed the part about the spirit R badge, but I imagine that they could have easily photoshopped that.

7racer 04-29-06 06:41 PM

Isn't that the "pseudo" Spirit R LHD they had at Seven stock?

maxcooper 04-29-06 06:47 PM

Almost 3 hours since the "filp horizontal" post and no jokes relating that to AJ yet? You guys are slipping. Or maybe my expectations have been tainted by The Lounge.

Amazing how anal some people can get. When I started this thread, I thought I'd mention how I thought the steering wheel had been photoshopped to the other side to make the image more palatable for the American audience at which the ad was aimed. But then I thought, "Naw, that would be too effing anal." We're all entirely too focused on these cars. (And that goes for me too.)

For my two cents, ad agencies cut costs wherever they can. AJ, acting as a model, never saw that car. Her photo was taken in front of a blank screen. Some hack graphic artist at the agency came up with that image. Possibly got it off the web. It's obviously been worked on. Look at the front license plate. It's just black. It probably said RX-7. Likely it was one of the stock Spirit R shots or promo photos. It was worked over to suit what the agency envisioned for the ad.

Have you ever followed car sales brochures year to year? Photo shoots are expensive. When they change rims or optional equipment on a car they often doctor the image rather than shoot the car again. I've seen this for numerous kinds of cars. Compare the 93, 94, and 95 FD sales brochures sometime.

i dunno, i bought the mag because of this pic. i was like, hey, its my color and my front ! but in any case, i believe it is that one spirit-r they made for the US. (in the case that they did actually use mothers on it) otherwise, yeah, its probably a chop job.
