Speedometer not working.
What should i be looking for, on Fc's its a mechanical cable, i know that isn't the case here, i was under my FD tonight and didn't know what i should be looking at.
You should start by checking the connection. If that's not it, next is to start checking the capacitors and resoldering all the joints on the board.
The stock speedo gets its signal from the ECU, and that is rarely the problem. In what fashion did your speedo stop working? Does the needle just sit at 0? Does it light up? Does your Odometer still display? Did the problem start suddenly? If everything works but the speedo, it's probably not a simple fix. |
Gauge lights up, odometer is active but the numbers aren't changing, speedo sits at zero. Tach and gas gauge works, oil and water temp are unplugged and i know that for a fact.

He rebuilds gauge clusters, reasonable price too IIRC. |
check the speed sensor thats located on the trans. I believe that gets sent to the ECU which in turn sends a signal to the gauges. This would normally set a code though...so it could actually be the speedometer itself. My speedometer recently shorted itself out...replacing the speedo with a used one fixed my problem
+1 to speedsensor
same thing happened to me before on another car and end up being that... that car was a 98 |
I didn't hear any warnings of any type when i took it out for a spin the other night so shitty, new cluster . . . maybe i should check connections at the Power FC as well?
did you check to see if the speed sensor is plugged in? I believe it plugs into the main engine harness right above the trans. I imagine it would have fell when you took out the speed sense but I figured its worth mentioning.
hmm the FSM mentions NOTHING of this important part of the car so if anyone has pictures or diagrams or anything the help would be much appreciated
alright so my PFC reads 0kph so obviously the signal isn't getting that far, where on the tranny is this actual sensor? somewhere near the drive shaft end I imagine similar to the FC?
if you take off the transmission cover (metal cover on the bottom of the car), you will be able to see the sensor connections on the driver's side of the transmission. Check those first. The speedometer sensor is I believe on the passenger side of the transmission. The wiring should loop over the top of the transmission.
Old thread been very busy with other problems, but the speed sensor IS plugged in, yet the PFC and the speedo both receive zero signal.
You need to remove the sensor and use a voltmeter to test it and see if it is working. This is probably your problem. The "Body Electrical Service Manual" contains the procedure.
quick question, does the speedsensor go to the speedometer or the ECU first, or both? If the speeedometer was broken and it sent its signal to the ECU then that could also be the cause could it not?, the wiring harness is brand new, so i trust that to be ok.
See page Z-44 of your manual which I know you have there in your garage. On that page you will see the two wires from the Speedo sensor goes directly to the dash CPU area. You will see a series of 5 connectors to check. Then trun to page C1-10 and the manual will spell out an excellent flowchart of the symptom/repair procedure. Rather easy if you ask me.

So did you ever get your speedometer working? Mine just quit. I had an eletrical short just now while I was driving (completely my fault). Everything on my cluster still works except for the speedometer. Now my gauge is pegged full right 190MPH and just sits there. I don't have a problem with my tranny gear as the odometer still works. |
Scratch the above. I just pulled my cluster and spun the needle back to it's normal position. Now it's working fine. It's nice to catch a break every now and then. :) On a sad note, I now a broken tab to show for it. LOL! You can't win for losing!

never got mine working, just going to replace all gauges with speedhut models after the rebuild, so very tired of broken gauges, so why not switch to ones with programmable warnings for the same price as a spirit R cluster.
