Speedometer fix help
 

I have searched and search. I have replaced all the capacitors on the speedometer and even the one that's on the tachometer. EVERYTHING but the speedometer works. It would work for a second or 2 and it'll stop. When i first got the car, the speedometer worked but the tachometer was intermittent and the odometer had the blacklight but no numbers. After the fix, when the speedometer is working, it'll count the miles but once its off its off, but the odometer is still operational. I have NOT messed with the speedometer sensor, but i haven't gotten down there to even mess with it. I guess i will check it the speedometer, but has anyone figured it out yet? This is getting endless and i dont want to spend +$500 for a new cluster. So i'll keep at it! any input would help. Thanks in advance

Get a portable GPS and use the speedometer function so you can at least drive it safely until you fix it. Not having GPS navigation sucks anyway.

You don't need a speedo. Just drive, if you see red and blues behind you you know your going to fast lol.

I have a similar problem. The odometer went out so I had several leaking capacitors replaced and the numbers now display when the car is in the first "on" position. When you then turn the engine on, the odometer works for about 2 seconds but then blanks out. If you turn the car off, you then have to wait about 30 seconds before you can get the odometer to work again in the first position only of course.

^Yep, I used that to "fix" my odometer but it gave me the results I posted.

ditto, i used that thread as the basis of my repair. i'm hoping my EE friend will give me some input and test out my board. does ANYONE know which cap or resistor controls the speedometer? .. BTW make sure you use flux when doing solder joints.. and then clean it up with alcohol wipes. flux is conductive. we dont want crossed connections =D no time to look at speedometer sensor today. still thinking its the speedometer board itself. weekend will be speedometer sensor check

iphone speedometer app is your friend for now :D

You can use a voltimeter and the FSM to check the voltage from the speedometer signal wire (in theory) to make sure you're getting a signal. If you aren't, it's the wiring, not the gauge itself. Then again I'm not sure how the FD speedo works exactly...

Or it could be the cable... you might as well check it.


Are you really confident with your solder job? Because back when I was making repairs on my FC's console warning lights and clock, I remember taking it back apart and redoing the solder job I had done, and it started working.

BTW, were you able to find the capacitors required in stock at a Radio Shack?

valkyrie, i am pretty confident with the solder joints. i actually resoldered a few joints cuz they weren't done with flux. I bought all my capacitors online at the recommended store in main thread. since i bought extra capacitors i might just use new ones.

Update: so i changed my PFC to read speed, and it looks like there is no signal coming from the speedometer sensor. I get down to the transmission and look for the speedometer sensor and i find 3 plugs and 2 sensors that are attached. I have a FSM but to me it looks like all the images are mirror images, so it completely throws me off. I saw 1 sensor that was on the driver side of the transmission and is attached like it was a big bolt. On the passenger side there is a sensor that is attached with a 10 or 12 mm bolt. i guess its time to change the VSS? but which one is it? driver side or passenger side? i still can't really rule out the cluster problem since my VSS MIGHT be broken. any suggestions? time for GPS speedo install? =D

oops no need to answer the VSS question.. its the one with the bolt! just did some more google search.. i'll take it apart and see if the plastic gear is still on it.

friends, i can't remove the vss.. bolt was removed.. but i guess i have to lower the tranny to remove the VSS itself? please advise.
