SPARK PLUGS: Are These The Right Ones?
 

howdy, i've finally found some time to start working on fixing my high end problem as discussed in this thread.

i decided it wouldn't hurt to first change the plugs and see if they're the problem as i now know they haven't been changed in probably at least 18k miles while the racing beat wires are fairly new. i'm trying to find a good deal on the price for these and mazdaperformance seems to have a good price but i'm not sure what to buy. i've found these plugs:

under their tune up section but it doesn't have a part number like the one's recommended to me:

spyfish suggested i try NGK BUR9EQ on all four plugs. i know there's 9 and 7s but if i order the plugs from mazdaperformance, whihc plugs will i be getting? it sounds like they're selling in increments of ONE plug and i should enter a quantity of 4 but what plugs will they ship me if i order 4? will they give me two 9s and 2 7s or what? they're charging 7.10 each which is the best i can find. thanks in advance for the help.

They will send you four; two leading (NGK BUREQ7) and two trailing (NGK BUREQ9).

You will probably need to get a hold of them to send four of the same.

You could always go to PepBoys and get the same NGK BUREQ plugs for $4 each. They are the same ones just not platinum.

You do not need platinum plugs, as you should be changing your plugs ever 10 to 20 k miles, which defeats the purpose of platinum plugs.

PS. The 9's are a colder plug.

so what's the purpose of platinums?

pros and cons

all the platinum means is a tougher metal that the grounding electrodes are coated with the aid in longer life. If you have many mods, the plugs will foul out easily anyway, especially with city driving or extended hiway cruising. The non plat's won't hurt performance, you'll just need to replace them often(maybe every 3K miles or so) If you're car sits alot, the plat's may only last that long as well, it's up to you if you want to spend the extra $$$ to get the plat's or not. (the non plat plugs can be cleaned with a wire brush when they foul out to extend their life, whereas the wire brush will ruin the platinum finish on the plat plugs and possibly cause hot spotting to occur, bad.)

what's the case for running all 9s (colder plugs) instead of using the two 9s and two 7s?

Colder plugs ward off detonation easier by eliminating hot spots on the plug. The withstand heat soak bette by dissapating the heat into the ceramic insulator better and thus help prevent detonation. However, the colder the plug the easier it fouls. Ah, the laws of physics suck don't they!

In case you have to go deal with emissions testing anytime soon, running a pair of leading 7's will help out a bit. Platinums do last longer and only cost another $2/per.

hey where do you guys get your spark plug wrenches??? i have bought two different socket attatchments and neither are deep enough for the long dickie sticking out from the top!
