some questions about FD
 

I have a wrx and i had my tranny break on me and its getting fixed, but i dont want to drive my car around knowing that it will break anytime, so i was either going to sell it and get a sti(super rock solid tranny) or get an FD. Im only 18 years old, and the sti would only be 50 bucks more a month than waht im paying now, and i would prolly keep it mostly stock except for bolt ons. Or i could get an FD and have no car payments and just work for mods or fun money. How solid/strong are FD3S Transmissions? I want a true rwd sports car, but i dont want it to be weak like the base wrx transmission is. Also im not sure what the FD3S twin turbo redline is? Is it 7000 or 7500 or 8000? Also the turbos are sequential, meaning they are different size and spool up in sequence(bigger one spools up when at higher rpm/more load so it has enough exhaust gas to spool it) right? Just trying to clarify some information. Thanks guys!

look at it this way, you might be able to afford the car with no payments but make sure you have half of what you paid for the car in the bank just incase it breaks.

both turbos are the same but yes the primary works until you get to ~4500 and the secondary kicks in.

also 5th gear syncros are known for grinding. like in mine. costs $500-600 to have fixed

to answer your other question, redline is 7500rpm, some say 8000rpm, but the red starts at 7500 and then is solid at 8000 so i don't know which u'd say. Also, how much are you thinking an FD costs...in otherwords, how much money do you have without having to take a loan? The initial cost of and FD isn't all that bad, but you need to be ready for the possiblity of an engine rebuild because the heat caused by the turbos and the fact that rotaries run hot anyways, shortens the life of an otherwise very reliable long lasting engine. Thats why people will recommend you do the reliability mods when you get your car to lengthen the life of the engine. These will cost you about 2-3k unless the car you bought has the mods on it.........read the newbie thread so you can understand what you are getting yourself into. Read all this before you test drive one.....because you will buy one if you test drive it, especially if its in good running shape....

stock tranny is very stong, im sure it will handle any amount of hp that u want out of a street car, as in 500+ hp. an auto tranny is a diffrent story. they suck, and are only good for about 300hp. redline for 5spd tranny is 8k, auto is 7k. as for the cost: an fd may be cheaper to buy, but maintance is a bitch. when you buy the car, you need at least $1000 to $2000 for relialibility mods + a few fun extras. and if you are not nice to her, she will break your heart, and your wallet. if you want a true sports car that will drain your wallet and become an addiction, get the fd. if you want a car that requires very little maintence get the sti. ive never driven an sti, so i dont know much about them, but good luck.

Vosko works his trans/diffs over. Other than Vosko, the stock transmission is pretty solid.

im going to sell my wrx and all my mods and ill ahve 10,000 to play around with. Thats 95% enough money for a FD, i know they range from 10-15,000. Or i could use the money for a downpayment on a sti. My payments right now for my 03 wrx are 320 a month and the sti would be 380 a month. Which insurance do u guys think is higher, a 93-95 rx-7 twin turbo 5speed 2 door sports car, or a 2004 wrx sti turbo 6speed sedan? I love both cars so much, but i have been in the subaru family for 3 years so its going to be hard for me to leave, but man i love fd's soooo much :eek:

you won't find an FD in good drivable condition for 10k, the range will be more like 16-20k.

HA, i beg to disagree. Ive had 2 FDs, 12k for the 1st and 10k for the second, and personally I think the second is in bad ass condition (knocking on wood). Mine runs just fine and have no probs w/ it.

maybe its different in texas...up north they are tough to find and I couldn't find any for 10k in good condition cause there are so few, at least thats been my experience

You'll have enough to purchase a cheaper FD, but you won't have enough to keep it going. Most are that price for a good reason, other than a very few exceptions.

Hmm... Somone please report back the price of new turbos, new engine, and labor. That should end this thread pretty quick. :p:

Seriously, if you're worried about driving a car that might break at any given time, don't buy an FD. Thats what they're known for.

STi's are fast as christ and come with a warranty. Get one.

And you may have to tack on the price of a paint job and all the maintenance items: brakes all around, clutch, susp. bushings/bearings, etc.

I think I've seen this "Christ" guy around here... he keeps it under the limit tho! Our cars are a bit faster ;)

10 to 15K would not buy much of an FD in Ca. You'd need to start at 15 and go up depending on condition/ miles etc......

If your not in a hurry you can find a hell of an FD for 15 to 16k. Dont believe me, your all in denial. I watch ebay and autotrader on a daily basis. Granted they dont all go that cheap, many do. A 93 cym with a brand new pinapple under the hood, new paint, new 17 in adr's, tuned PFC, and all the other trimmings went for 16k on ebay two weeks ago. Still dont believe me, check out this link. Had I not been trying to buy that damn JSPEC one at the time I would have bid on it.

Y'all are right though, although this car can be reliable, its not a daily driver. Tell you what though, nothing better than beating the shit out of and sti. Seems like every person who ownes one thinks its the fastest car ever made. Kind of like me with the 7. Till I lined up with that bastard around the corner with the 600hp supra. I could have cried after that one. Dont happen very often though. ;)

I don't belive anyone posting to this thread said 15-16k buys you a crappy FD.:confused: It's the 10k FD's you have to watch out for.

That is, unless you're in Ca... They're a bit more expensive, because of the "limited market" of Ca. legal cars.
