Some more questions related to the new StopTech Big Brake Kit

Hi everyone,
StopTech now has measurements on an FD3. The car has been in the shop for a couple of days.

I do have some more questions regarding our upcoming kit(s) for the car.

At this point, we're leaning towards a front only kit, or two front only kits (a 332mm and/or a 355mm). The parking brake is an issue on this car, which may necessitate more of an engineering effort than we are able to afford at this time.

1. I need some more feedback on speeds people are reaching on the track. Please tell me the tracks you drive, and the top speeds you are reaching before the braking zones. I'm trying to get a handle on the amount of thermal capacity you guys need.

2. What track wheels are you running? I need the brand and size.

The Istook/Aines S4 running our brakes in Grand Am is running a 332 kit, and they are hitting over 160mph in a big car...Click here for details: http://www.stoptech.com/press_releas...leadsclass.htm
I'm thinking that might be enough for the FD3. A 355mm would probably be dead weight to haul around, and it would necessitate 18" wheels (again, more weight, more expensive rubber, etc.) The objective is to deliver the best balanced braking performance and necessary thermal capacity using the smallest/lightest package possible. Anything else is dead weight, and only contributes to the bling factor.

Thanks. I'm still not sure about delivery dates, etc. at this point, so please don't harass me! :D I can assure you that I'll do my best to get the kit(s) made, tested, and delivered.

I think front only is a great way to go business-wise... you wouldn't sell very many 4 wheel kits IMO.

At Summit Point, my single turbo FD running on low boost (around 365 rwhp) can reach about 150 on the straight no problem. With full boost (5 more PSI on pump gas) I could have even more speed hehehehe.

I run 225/50 16 inch Toyo RA-01 on my car but I WILL be going to something 17 inches as soon as I can. Probably something around the 255/40 neighborhood.

The 332 kit is plenty for me. I'm running 9x17s in front...probably going to 18s soon however.

I will be good if they can fit behind 5zigen FN01R-Cs with 43mm offset. Should have plenty of clearance for the bigger brakes.

I think you'll find many people running 17s and 18s with 245-255 fronts with power output and speeds averaging similar to Wargasm's. I've read some posts in the Suspension section testifying to this.

Thanks for the replies.

Well, that's what we've been telling people all along. When you try to feel-out interest however, everyone wants a 4 wheel kit with 15 inch rotors! When wallets open however, it's often times a different story. :p: The reality is though, that when designed properly, the front solution should be more than adequate. We have a host of Speed World Challenge cars running our front only kits...and they are probably a little tougher on their brakes than the average track-day enthusiast.

Hmmm...almost wish I hadn't moved from NJ...I need a ride in your car...sounds fun. I'm sure there's someone in LA that will take me for a spin though. If it's that fast, it has to have our brakes on it before I get in it though. :D

I'm not familiar with that wheel. When the kit is ready, we will have a downloadable template on our website. You will be able to print it out, cut it out, and check your wheel clearance with it (we already have this on our site for our other kits).

That seems to be the consensus. Thanks!

8.5 x 17" Fikse FM5s. Please manufacture enough clearance so that I can use the 332mm kit. :) 355mm would be overkill.

332 sounds good to me. I'd have the space for a 355, but can't justify the need or weight. I'd rather have an option for the rear wheel kit, but only if it retains the parking brake and offers a significant performance advantage.

If it helps, curb weight for a stock 3d gen runs around 2800 to 2900 lbs. I would guess (and this is a WAG) 300 lbs. deviation either way to accomodate weight reduction or addition with respect to the car. Weight of drivers? I'm around 180.

Tracks: Willow Springs (big), Buttonwillow (usually the largest CW config), Laguna Seca, Thunderhill. Would like to try Sears Point and California Speedway, if I can work them in.

As for speeds-- eh, better to ask someone that's speedy :) Hopefully, the guys that track more frequently will chime in.

Volk CE28N, 18x9.5 w/47mm offset at all four corners. DOT R-compound tires for track. Street will be Volk SE37A, 18x9.5 w/45mm offset at all four corners. The SE37As might see track duty if I need a spare, or want to try different tires at the track.

Other than the already stated factors, I really hope that you can make this kit available with triple chrome plated calipers and dayglo brake lines. ;)

Hi,

I'd consider the 355 one cuz of bling bling factor. Who wouldn't like extra bling when you can? (Of cause, I'm no racer.)

Thanks for the help guys.

Kento,
No idea about your wheels. You can probably download the template for the 332 350Z kit on our website, and try fitting that inside your wheel. That should give you a decent idea of what kind of space you need.

May I ask what your target dates for completion and price are for the kit?

I WAS going to buy a different kit, but i might wait for yours if it were to be completed in time for the upcoming track season.

From his first post in this thread:

"I'm still not sure about delivery dates, etc. at this point, so please don't harass me!"

From this thread:

https://www.rx7club.com/showthread.p...5&pagenumber=2

"...So, a ballpark cost for a 328mm front only anodized kit would be roughly $1695-1795 vs. approximately $1995 for a painted 332mm kit."

"Our 328 kit would be more in the $1700-1800 range..."

J Ritt 01-12-04 07:19 PM

Hi guys...I'm pushing for having this thing ready by the end of February. Hopefully we can get it done. I think that's a realistic expectation at this point. :)

Dom, thanks for posting my prior info!

I recognize a lost cause when I see one, but I, too, would like a rear brake upgrade with parking brake.

RX7 RAGE 01-18-04 03:47 PM

I'll be purchasing a 332 kit as well. :)

The two hardest tracks on brakes I can think of in the east are VIR full and BR.
Your average FD (~300rwhp) hits 140 twice at VIR and brake down to 60ish mph. There are a couple more 100ish mph to 40-60 brake zones. But there is some recovery time between braking zones.
BR doesn't have the high speed, but there is little recovery time. One 125 down to 40 followed immediately by another 125 straight down to 70ish. There are a couple other shorter braking zones in the twisty section.
I can fade Hawk Blues on stock brakes on both of those tracks.
The aforementioned Summit Point does have a 1/2 mile long straight where a mild FD can easily clear 140, but there is sufficient recovery time.

Mazda 16x8 ;) I wanted to make an argument for stock wheel fitments so I tried the 332mm template. It took me about 1.46 seconds to realize that wasn't going to happen. One can dream right?
