solenoid test question
 

do you have to put voltage on every solenoid.

How much pressure do I apply to each one?

How do I know if the solenoids are in the correct order on the rats nest.

Will I have any problems using solenoids from a jdm motor?



I have searched and have the service manual im looking for clarification.

I found a diagram for the order of the solenoids in the rack. But dont know if the solenoids are labeled or marked to identified themselves.

I beleive the solenoids have coloured stickers on to match the coloured plugs , but possibility of the stickers been still on the solenoids with all that heat is slim. saying that most of the solenoids are exactly the same so you can swap and interchange them (all the ones in the actual rack are exactly the same, and are the same on all other japanese/ american models so you can swap and interchange any of these). Let me know if you dont completly understand and ill get you a diagram to show you which ones are the same.

As for actually checking the solenoids,, have a read st the bottom of this page it has some pictures and videos explaining roughly how to check them:-

The stickers often don't match the plugs or the stickers are so faded you can't tell anyway. Go by the diagram - they are all the same except for the filter basket on some nipples. You can pull the filter basket and move it to another location if you want. I suspect the stickers were used to aid factory assembly or something.

The only solenoids that need a pressure test are the turbo control and charge relief solenoids in the rack. It needs to not leak and release instantly with up to 14 or 15psi; refer to the link that tiger18 provided. The solenoids used in the other locations only need to work under vacuum. If your turbo control solenoid fails then try any other similar solenoid in the rack.

This is also know as the "Disney" test, where you actually place a load (pressure & vaccuum) and possibly heat on the solenoids.

FWIW, I had a 50% success factor against NEW solenoids from the Factory.

But, just the one solenoid needs power connected when testing?

And should I test the vacuum on them also? If so how much suction? maybe 19 or 20? Like on my boost gauge.

Yep, test the vacuum too. 25in is plenty. You only need to power one solenoid at a time. I use a 9v battery.

If not what ones are the same

Yes they all are spring-return plungers.

The TC solenoid might have a slightly different spring but I'm not sure. The TC solenoids I've bought from Mazda don't test any better than the others.
