Smoke Problem

I have a big problem. I'll be driving down the road and all is fine but when i stop, quite a bit of smoke starts coming out of my exhaust. Looks kinda grayish blue i think.

While i had my stock cat on nothing happened. But i added a midpipe and thats when the smoke started. So i got rid of the midpipe and got a high flow cat.

For the first week or two everything was fine, until about 5 or 6 days ago it has started doing its smoking shit again and i have no idea whats causing it.

If anyone can help me i would greatly appreciate it. Also, the previous owner told me the new engine only has about 28,000 miles on it. Thanks...

I presume when you took out the main cat you also disconnected the air pump, right? If you disconnected the air pump there are certain air passages that need to be closed up as well. I have not removed my air pump, but a search on this site should have plenty on air pump removal. Rob Robinette may also have a 'how to' on the subject. This may be the reason you are running so rich.

ttrx74me Nov 25, 2003 04:44 PM

No i didnt, there was a spot on the HF cat that i could connect it to.

SVT Squasher Nov 25, 2003 11:20 PM

You say new motor. How many miles are on the turbos? Mine started blowing oil at about 60k. It could just be a kiwinky that it happend after the mid pipe. You need to figure out blue or black smoke to see if its oil or fuel. Good luck...

ttrx74me Nov 26, 2003 08:47 AM

I dont know how many miles are on the turbos, but i found out it is blue smoke.

Rx2Fast Nov 26, 2003 11:34 AM

do a compression test

hey man , my car used to smoke like that but because I had no cat I didn't think anything of it, but it turned out I had a blown rotor, a simple compression test can tell you that.

ttrx74me Nov 26, 2003 03:06 PM

OK thanks ill have a test done...

ttrx74me Nov 26, 2003 03:18 PM

Just in case, anyone know where and how much a new rotor would be?

Dear Sir,

From my experience and from what you are describing I believe you have just detonated your engine.

What is your idle?

I am sorry to tell you this.

Take care.

skunks Nov 26, 2003 04:49 PM

are you premixing? blue smoke=oil

ttrx74me Nov 26, 2003 05:25 PM

My car idles around 1,000 i think... No im not premixing, havent really heard about doing it.

ttrx74me Nov 26, 2003 05:44 PM

Also, ever since i had the car it has idled weird. Kinda sounds like it cuts out. I thought it might have to do with plugs so i got the plugs and wires replaced.

My next thing was maybe something is wrong with the vaccuum hoses. I was also going to get new turbo hoses replaced at the same time but if my engine has detonated, then i dont know what to do.

If my engine has detonated, then i really hope i meet up with the guy who sold me my FD.

TMarsland Nov 26, 2003 05:55 PM

Check to see if the turbos are blowing oil, and if you know quite a bit about the car I would take off the intake manifold and check the vacuum hoses. It could be that if one is loose or blown off that you detonated your engine. I'm betting though that it's your turbos.

BATMAN Nov 26, 2003 06:00 PM

Anytime someone mentions mid pipe and symptoms that the author is describing, it leaves me to believe that he has detonated.

ttrx74me Nov 26, 2003 06:21 PM

Ok, im going to have my car checked out monday i hope, thanks for all the advice... haha im sure ill be posting some more info.

I am: You have your terms confused. Detonation is something that happens when your air/fuel mixture is not correct. Detonation will cause apex seals to break and a loss in compression.

ttrx74me: your gonna have to tell us overall mileage on the car and what other mods you have on there and what your boost pattern is. it sounds like either your turbos or motor are on their way out. it might not be that you need to replace immediately or maybe you do.

sounds like the cat was keeping the exhaust looking normal and when you put the midpipe on, all that smoke no longer being filtered in the cat.

make sure you take it some place that knows FDs or else you're gonna get jerked around.

ttrx74me Nov 26, 2003 06:55 PM

The mods i have are downpipe, HF cat, Greddy Evolution cat back, Intake, and the car has 125K on it. I have a boost guage on the way.

ttrx74me Nov 26, 2003 06:58 PM

Also, the reason i was going to get new turbo hoses is because i thought i had a leak. When i had my car on a lift putting the exhaust on, we noticed a small leak that looked like it was coming from a turbo... does it mean anything

ttrx74me Nov 26, 2003 07:36 PM

In case my engine is dead, anyone know about how much $ a rebuild would be, also somewhere around NC that could do the job.

jg937 Nov 26, 2003 09:54 PM

are you running any kind of aftermarket ecu to handle those mods, how about a boost controller?

ttrx74me Nov 26, 2003 10:06 PM

Trying to save and get them...

alberto_mg Nov 26, 2003 10:21 PM

turbo hoses? do you mean vacuum hoses? you don't see leaks from vacuum hoses. they hold air.

do yourself a favor and don't buy anything else for the car and have it looked at by a competent shop in your area. go to the regional forums and ask around or click the search button. sounds like you will be needing some major work soon - start saving up ~$3k or more.

clayne Nov 27, 2003 03:03 AM

Why is it only I Am is the one cueing into the strong possibility that this guy simply just blew his motor after installing a mid-pipe?

He increased the airflow, but did not do proper tuning to compensate for it --> leans out, detonation, game over.

Yea, such as a MID-PIPE making your A/F "not correct."

"Trying to save and get them..."

See this is why you do reliability and tuning mods before you do airflow modifications. Get the compression checked, good luck.

.

felix_is_alive Nov 27, 2003 10:46 AM

what i can think of is either turbo or engine ,do the compression test its easy and simple ,if you got a problem fix the engine ,if not its most likely the turbos...also an easy tip ,check youre plugs for oil deposits that should tell you rather quick what the deal is
