SMIC questions
 

I am thinking of getting a SMIC soon, either M2 medium or large, or the Pettit Cool Charge III. I was probably going to instal the IC myself, and was wonder how hard it would be. I dont think it would be very hard, except for fitment issues. That is probably my biggest concern. I will probably get the M2 Medium but, if I get the Pettit or M2 Large, I dont want to relocate the battery, and was wondering who is using the Hawker Odyssey PC680, and what they think about it. Is it as powerful as a regular car battery? Thanks for the help.

i went with the asp large smic, and a greddy elbow. when i get the parts in i'll do a write- up on the install.

Pettit has a nice newly designed CCII that fit really well. Retains the battery in its stock location. The photo they have in their "installation" section is one painted black and was the prototype. The one I received is aluminum (not painted) and has well-conceived internal fins. Pretty easy install., too, IF you pull the battery to free-up some room.

the m2 medium intercooler is good enough, but it is all depending on your application and what you intend to do with your car

I dont intend to go single, or use the car as a track/race car, so I think the M2 medium is good. I really like the V-mounts, but is alot of money and I already have a rad. Also is the instalation very hard on the M2 mediums?

from what my friend said who installed that, it is not very hard to install, he had a harder time taking his stock intercooler off versus putting the aftermarket one

It can become time consuming when you have other aftermarket stuff installed (like me - Koyo radiator). I had problems fitting the IC duct and had to trim it a little...

yeah v-mounts are great!! it took me about 2 hours to install my SMIC, it was the greddy one though.

the main bummer about upgrading the IC is that you should really get the car tuned afterward. installing the IC is the easy part.

Yeah I have to get my car tuned, but there arent many people here is Calgary who do it. I hope to get it tuned right after the IC is installed, but I might have to wait a bit, or just drive it without boosting.

I have one more question, how does the intercooler mount to the car? Is there a bracket that attaches to the crossmember, or how does that work? Thanks for the help.

While you're making a decision, you should give my buddy Mike a call. He has a brand new Pettit stock mount intercooler with fitted duct, that he recently won at Rotary Revolution. He's selling it cheap because he has no use for it with his V-mount set up.

Most of the larger SMIC's just "sit" in there. Don't worry, they are a tight fit so it's not a problem. Some of the others like the Blitz SMIC do bolt down to the crossmember.

M2 large seem the best way to go. relocatting the battery is actually easy once you start doing it. the hawker is a bit small of a battery. you could use this if you plan to place the battery in the bins. my battery is in the trunk, so i have a red top.

with regard to your battery question, i have a pc680 relocated to the passenger bin and it works great. also, i would not recommend an optima battery. i have had two and both had short lives and were not worth the extra money. i have three friends who have had similar experiences with the optima. the pc680 has plenty of cold cranking amps and my car actually fired quicker than with the regular battery it replaced. the only catch with the optima is that you CAN'T leave any accessories on for more than a short time without the car running (lights especially). also, you're saving a few pounds with the optima. i think mine with aluminum mounting bracket weighs 14 pounds. don't be afraid of the relocation, it is pretty simple and frees up alot of space under the hood. i did my relocation in anticipation of a bigger ic but haven't purchased one yet.

I had the Greddy SMIC and I had it installed in 20 minutes.

I installed my Medium SMIC on my previous FD in 10-30 min... doesnt' take long if you've had your hands down there before.
