SMIC intercoolers, hp output
 
I am wondering how much hp u can get with an SMIC, thinking about M2's and pettits.

I'm thinking of having an SMIC built that will be
Core size: 280mm*300mm(about 11"x12")

The car will have a 3" full exhaust and open air filters.
Wanna know about both streetported and unported engine. ECU(ofcourse)
larger injectors, fuelpump and so on

I'd like to know how much boost i can run and what intake temps i will see.

Thinking of this or an FMIC, but since my car will be on the track alot i don't want to block the radiator.

I doubt its worth getting a custom IC. IC core and endtanks are usually relatively cheap, but the ducting and piping gets expensive.

On stock twins and preprogrammed ECU you're good for around 320rwhp at best (stock fuel system). With PFC or similar and upgraded fuel system you can get up to around 350rwhp (give or take a few).

Generally ppl say for drag racing = FMIC
Trackracing = SMIC and good ducting

But you can talk this IC issue all year long and come to no real conclusion. Your pick.

I agree with ruiser in that it's hard to say which IC is best but the popular FMIC will handle 300 - 400 whp without any propblems but moving the radiator around and making room for the FMIC can be a lot of work. Cooling is always an issue though so be sure to include a quality radiator with those upgrades (SR mortor sports has a huge 2+" radiator) and you might also consider upgrading your oil cooler package too - stock sucks! A vented hood will make a big difference with either SMIC or FMIC and eng. cooling so add that to your big power upgrade list.

Many people have run over 400 rwhp with SMICs with no problem.

I will manufacture the piping myself. My car is not a dragcar, only track. I want to be able to run alot of laps without a stop. That's why i'm negative to put an FMIC in.

Thinking of getting around 400 hp to the engine, not sure if the IC i wanna build will get there.

You will definitely need to upgrade your oil cooling system if you plan on running a lot of laps at a racetrack (taking care of your coolant system would probably help as well). Running 400 hp and doing a lot of laps can be done, but you will build up a lot of heat after consecutive laps.

You will need to ensure that the ducting around your radiator is sealed properly, and that your bellypan is in good shape. You should definitely invest in a set of upgraded oil coolers (Rotary Extreme, CWR, whatever), along with the proper ducting to go with them.

You can run 400 hp with medium or large SMIC with no problem. However, you should make sure that you have some ducting that directs airflow from the nose of the car to the IC (by that, I mean a duct that protrudes into direct airflow, not just an opening in the intake nacelle like the stock setup), as that will help intake temps.

On the same token, there are many on this board who run a FMIC with no cooling problems, but there is some fabrication involved to ensure that the radiator is getting enough airflow.

As far as 400hp at the track and running MANY laps.... Well, you most likely won't be doing that with stock twins. While you might dyno out around there, most track guys don't run high boost on the track due to the heat the twins put out.

If you want to put 400hp on the track for many laps, you are going to need to look at more than just a good IC as Kento has pointed out. To put that kind of power on the track for extended sessions, you'll need to look at a decent single turbo like the Apexi (or just turn down the boost like the rest of us on track days).

Well I was able to generate enough power on the ASP Large SMIC to run corrected 10 second quarter miles @ 125mph with street legal tires on a stock unported motor and modified stock turbos running non sequentially. Oh I also ran it in the 6000 mile One Lap of America in 96 finishing first overall among first time entrants (14th overall of 96 entries) with hot shoe Jeff Littrell (smile) a couple weeks later. ~1900 miles was driving to the start in New York and then back home again. Of course that was all in 6 or 7 days.

As for building it yourself, have fun. Yes it is entirely possible but unless you do it for entertainment or your time is pretty worthless you won't be saving anything. Realistically you'll end up with a pretty sub par product as well. When I designed and built these versions I went through at least 4 or 5 different iterations for problems I hadn't thought of that came up along the way. There's a lot of tricks involved in things like the end tanks and even the core that you won't know about until you actually start using it for awhile and find out the hard way. Hand carved and molded parts like the duct work are beyond time consuming pretty unrealistic for you to make unless you're an experienced fabricator.

Along with my brother i have all the skill and equipment i need to fabricate a duct. Won't be making the IC since i dont have access to a good weld.

And i won't be trying to make 400 hp with stock turbos. only wondering if it's even possible to make 400 hp with the SMIC im thinking of, regardless of what other mods i will have to make.

When this project is all done i will post pics.

I made a SMIC the size of a ASP Med which is basically the size your looking at. Like mentioned earlier the hard part is the duct. Its very difficult and time consuming to design a good duct and you cant use the stocker as a mold cause its not sufficient.

By the time you buys the core with endtanks, U Bends for pipes, good couplings, clamps, and the material and time for the duct along with doing the duct a couple times before its "right" you might as well just get a ASP med IC.

BTW - On a IC that size I made 412rwhp and trapped 125mph in the 1/4. I also made about 20 dyno runs back to back with no problems. My intake temps stayed real close to a FMIC intake temps.

If you want to fab your own IC, I'd skip the smic and fab a V Mount with a aftermarket radiator....that way you wont have to design a complex duct, your just going to have to make some basic mounting brakets and shields

Since i live in sweden it won't be cheap to buy an IC fabricated in USA. Plus it's really satisfying to do your own stuff, atleast in my opninion.

I'm in sweden too, I have an ASP race SMIC. I got it used and I think building/having one built would be more expensive than buying from overseas. Especially since the USD exchange rate is falling like a brick.. Having an IC you made yourself would be kinda nice tough, just for the "I did this" -feeling.
