SMB exhaust

I got the first 2 parts of my SMB exhaust today( www.smb.net.au). I will post some pics up tomorrow to show the quality.

Basically the downpipe looks like a HKS downpipe...only much larger , with quality Stainless steel construction and very neat welding.

The main cat I ordered is a 4" metallic substrate cat..it just looks pretty! Has air pipes etc.

All of my pipe work is 3.5" stainless.

They are still to send the 3.5" cat back section. due to the fact I ordered 3.5" (Not their standard 3") and I have ordered a custom rear muffler that has twin outlets (Similar to RB) they have had to get a FD3s in to double check fitment beofre they send it to me. I must say I was impressed by the fact they have jigs to make all this, and were happy to modify to suit my requirements. They have taken a few weeks to get this far however (understandable )

If I get a chance I will be installing the DP tomorrow, and I will get some video of it with the DP, standard cat and standard cat back.

When i get the CB I will install it and get more video.

Then when I can afford to get my power FC tuned I will also install the mid section and get more video.

Sorry for not having photos as yet, but I will get them up.

Sounds good. Looking forward to seeing pictures of the whole setup.

Pictures of my shiny exhaust..(The first two sections anyways...cat back section still to arrive...I will post more pics when it does.) The downpipe I have now got installed (Using a flange adapter to fit to my stock cat..fit is VERY good..One bolt on the turbo end was very tight to screw the nut on..but it did go. (Lotsa swearing)) All the normal benefits..quicker spool. more power..less heat..blah blah..you know what a downpipe does

Comparison of the stock dump against 3.5" dump, and the stock cat against 4" metal substrate with 3.5" piping

Pipe diameter of standard against 3.5" . Inside of 3.5" has a bit of welding dust..the lip is also very smooth welded inside and ground smooth.

Its damn tight down there..steering and god knows what else in the way. And those studs are damn hard to get out! (Thankfully mine didn't bind at least)

Imagine trying to make this! fits very close when installed. NB: any black marks etc are just dirt..not bad welding or anything..I was too lazy to remove the buffing compound they left on.

Wish I could weld...sigh...

Looks like a mangled mess doesnt it! Fits well...just enough clearance past steering

A close up of the 4" metallic substrate cat. The heat shield is rather cute (especially when compared to the horrendous thing on the original.

we must have a sound clip when its all together

Max13BREW 06-22-05 08:44 AM

As I think I may have just bent my rear subframe....this might be a few weeks off...sigh
one wheel is closer to the guard than the other side wheel is...about 1/2 inch difference...Damnation!!!

I will put the full exhaust on and get a sound clip as soon as $$$ allow me to get my power FC installed and tuned.. (And obviously after I receive the third part hopefully in a few days...it is 3.5" SS with twin outlets..)

Just so people know..this exhaust is a custom model..not the standard smb exhaust. (I am trying to get the most power possible out of the twin turbo setup..upgraded BB turbos, porting etc in the next few months hopefully..)

Max13BREW 07-14-05 08:20 AM

Finally got the rest of the exhaust...should be going on in a few weeks (Waiting on my Power FC and tune...)

Heres some pics.

Looks good!

insomniac 07-15-05 02:23 AM

why does the dp look crushed, or is that the design?

https://img183.imageshack.us/img183/...age00193gf.jpg

Max13BREW 07-15-05 03:40 AM

Downpipe is for a right hand drive car...

Not only do we have the turbos down that side of the engine, we also have the steering rack and box stuck down there!! The crushed look is actually pretty damn good as it allows the 3.5" diameter of the pipe to assume a different shape without losing volume.
Probably about as effective as the 3" clean bend dump pipe you LHD people can use..

PS..that picture link you inserted is damn huge!!

CantGoStraight 07-15-05 10:18 PM

I wish he'd wrap his text.....that's a pain in the ass to chase that around ! ! ! ! !

HDP 07-15-05 10:31 PM

Similar to the HKS dp... how much was it if you don't mind me asking?

kuroi FD 07-15-05 10:45 PM

where did you get the catback? I need a new once since i was rearened the other day.

Max13BREW 07-16-05 03:55 AM

Firstly...please dont blame me for that huge damn picture causing text wrap problems...

Yeah..very similar shape to the HKS..just larger..and in Stainless not crappy mild steel

The whole system (Obviously including the cat back) came from www.smb.net.au
This is an australian company, which is a division of the walker muffler company (Makes a lot of OEM style mufflers here in Australia) must admit the quality of the gear is very high.

Mine was a special order (3.5" not 3"...and I opted for twin outlets instead of the standard drainpipe style) and came to around $2200 Australian including delivery (As I am in Australia freight might be a tad dearer for you people on the wrong side of the equator!)

They have pricing in both Aus and US dollars on their web site for the standard exhausts (Same as mine..just 3" with single tip)

If your after the same spec as mine they should be able to handle it...they took forever with mine as they were making jigs etc for repeated orders.

Hope that helps.
