Single turbo conversion
 
I want to convert to a single turbo but want to keep the ac and I am not crazy about relocating the battery. I am in Florida so that explains the need for the ac.

Why would converting to single turbo mean you can't have working AC? Lots of guys with single turbos and working AC.

Also you don't have to relocate the battery if you don't want to.

HKS currently sells a turbo prep kit, its basically the T04S kit without the turbo, for the price of a manifold and shipping. the manifold it comes with will fit with the airpump, so you can keep the AC and the emissions, and battery, if you like

Some more info. The turbo is currently non-sequential with air pump removed, Apexi fc, rats nest removed, and aluminum radiator. My main concern is the intercooler. I found a stock location one but it says it is for stock turbo. Looked at hks as suggested but not much install info. With current virus situation info is hard to get as many people are not working. What I am trying to go is improve reliability as this is a weekend driver.

We build plenty of single turbo cars with ac. No good reason not to keep it for a street car. Depending on what intercooler you go with you may need some minor to more involved reconfiguring of the ac lines. For Florida weather I strongly recommend the Greddy V mount to keep all temperatures in check. I've built several cars with ac that went down your way with no issues. All the stock lines can be bent to work but it is easier to modify some of them. Add a fan on the condenser and you should have no issues keeping coolant temperatures happy while having cold ac even in Florida summer heat.

@IRPerformance has installed an hks kit with the a/c. He can give you all the info you need as the lines the kit includes are for the RHD. custom a/c lines will have to be made

The issue here really isn't the single turbo but getting an intercooler that will work with AC.

What do you have for an intercooler right now - stock intercooler?

Pretty much any intercooler can work with a single turbo or a twin turbo setup. The only thing that will need to be addressed is the "hot side" pipe going from the turbo itself to the intercooler. That will likely need to be custom made, there's a lot of ways to make that work. It's doubtful you would find a bolt-on intercooler setup that will work with the single turbo you go with, there are SO many options and so many different spots the turbo can be in for things to line up.

Going with a larger stock mount IC with a good duct is by far the easiest way to get a better IC and you don't have to touch the existing radiator or AC condenser setup. There are also larger stock mount IC's that will work with a smaller than stock or stock battery.

Going to a front mount or V-mount intercooler requires substantial effort to get the AC working. It can be done, and it has been done, but you're looking at a lot of custom fab work. Going with a Greddy V-mount will require the least amount of fab work but you will need to discharge the AC, move the condenser, and bend and modify some of the AC lines to fit.

Yes but we found the Greddy Vmount performs far better in the real world as it better distributes the air between the intercooler and radiator. The HKS kit is designed to work with the stock radiator. Adding a larger radiator causes 2 issues: The fans will hang really low making it easy to bottom out and damage them. A thicker radiator doesn't allow enough clearance to move the adjustable splitter to direct more air to the intercooler. We've had issues on the dyno getting the intake temps down to a decent level due to this. The Greddy has a proprietary radiator that is included with the kit and a much better constructed intercooler core, even though it is slightly smaller. I know you made some really nice custom brackets on your personal setup but not everyone has the ability to do that.

i only mentioned the hks because the OP was asking specifically about the HKS v mount. it has nothing to do with my system.

if i had to chose a vmount again today, HKS wouldnt be my first choice, nor the second

My advice would be to go with a kit, or be prepared to spend a lot of time figuring shit out that someone else has already thought about for a small premium. Im just finishing up my build thats taken nearly two years lol, where as with a kit you could probably smash it out over a few months. Also proven results are a good peace of mind
