Side View Mirror Motor Overhaul
 

My side view mirrors have been getting noisier and slower over the last 23 years. So, I thought it might be time to overhaul or replace the motors. Has anyone every attempted to overhaul the side view mirror motors? Or, has anyone located a supplier for new motors? Failing that I was thinking of developing a how to for the Forum on mirror motor overhaul if someone hasn't already done it. If you have an old mirror to donate to the cause I would appreciate not having to irreparably damage mine learning how to do it. Taking it apart I have visions of springs, gears, and dodads flying out of the case never to return again. To get things started here are a few pictures of the disassembly, with a more formal how to to come if I am successful:

This is what the the side view mirror looks like without the mirror glass. I used a plastic interior auto trim tool and a hair dryer on high heat to remove the glass. Just heat the glass up with the hair dryer and carefully and slowly pry the glass off the plastic frame. Does anyone know what that white sticky substance is that hold the glass on? It is amazing that after 23 years it is still a gooey sticky mess.

Here is the backside of the motor and what looks like the only screw holding the case together, the markings on the case are E-1000 Type B:

And finally if you are disassembling the mirror get a JIS screwdriver, don't even think about trying to get these corroded screws out with a Phillips screwdriver.

Are you sure it's the motor and not the switch in the cabin?

You've gone farther than I have with taking one apart, hats off to ya!

+1 on JIS screwdriver, LOVE mine. Got a stubby one for Christmas too.

Oh, yes everything works fine it's just noisier than I remember back in '94. I did replace the drivers window switch, greased the window mechanisms, and replaced the key lock doors, as part of my "well, I've got the doors apart and the pieces spread across the garage floor. What else can I do for fun" maintenance program. :o:
