Should I replace the (blown) engine before selling the car?

Unfortunatly the time has come to say good by to the FD...:(
The engine blew...Wife isn't happy, (I am sure I am less happy though)
Here is what the car is...
The car is a 93 R1, clean title.
68k miles,
t-78
greddy fmic
sx fpr
756cc primary
1650cc secondarys
Lightened fly wheel
ACT sport/strip clutch
Greddy elbow
Greddy Type s BOV
Koyo rad
Aluminum AST
Denso upgraded fuel pump
Tech Edge WB02
Defi EGT
Defi Fuel pressure
Autometer Boost
Autometer AFR (just never removed it)
PFC ecu
with Datalogit
Profec B boost controller
Rockfordfosgate headunit
Greddy turbo timer
B&M short shifter
Momo shift knob
Excellent interior
Very good exterior
removed lights on center panel
arm rest ashtray
never smoked in
Aluminum scuff plates
relocated type 51R battery
Red trim

If I replaced the engine I would sell it anyway. Is it worth it (can I get marginally more) to replace the engine or just sell it, or part it out?

I think you should. The price of the car will increase if you have new engine in there. Having a blown engine will drop the price more than what it would cost to replace the engine IMO.
Get a reman from Malloy for $2K (and get it ported for like $500) and do the R+R yourself.
I think your car would sell for $20K-ish easily with a new motor.
Good luck.

The car is very nice BTW.

With the amount of mods you currently have, IMO, you'll get more money for the car with a new engine (rebuilt or reman) than without.

With those mods though, I would look into a rebuild with porting. Good luck!

If you do the work yourself, you will *always* get more in the end with a new engine.

JEC-31 05-12-03 06:27 PM

I have been rabidly reading all FD ads on the 'Net for weeks now.

FD with good motor: $13,000 (high miles, no extras) to $23,000 (low miles & lots of mods like yours).

FD with bad motor: $7000 to $9000. These vary a lot, as the mileage and body condition affects the price more. Yours would be high end, but people looking for a dead car expect to pay dead prices so finding a buyer who won't ruthlessly bargain you down will be hard.

Hope this makes your path a bit more clear...

I would not only replace the engine but also break it in and get it dyno and compression tested to verify everything is running perfect again. Personally I'd be willing to pay much more for a car like that, especially if it is modded, because it can be difficult to sort out issues with a modded car that you are new to. Of course, after you do all that, you're not going to want to sell it anymore :D .

jpandes 05-12-03 08:06 PM

I bet if you put all the wrench time in reinstalling a new motor by yourself, you'll probabaly end up keeping the car....

coop 05-13-03 10:33 AM

Thanks for the advice, I believe I will follow it. It will also allow me to drive it that last 500 ish miles before selling it.
I probably would want to keep it, but I have made up my mind. It was an awesome car, I loved tinkering with it, but Im getting married and I might just have to look into the WRX STI....:) you know 4 doors, the wife likes that idea :D

Sell the wife and keep the car! :D

nycrx7 05-13-03 01:18 PM

I say EVO - cheaper than the STI, and its faster right?

bureau_c 05-14-03 12:08 AM

Wait just a second...you're GETTING married? You're not married already? Dude, THIS IS YOUR LAST CHANCE! If you come with the car, you can keep it. Its grandfathered in. Sell it now and you will never be able to get anything like it again. Don't mess this up! :-)

PS: I'm only joking. Honest. :-|

how did it blow?
i see you had a wideband, etc.
shitty gas?

mazdaspeed00 05-14-03 03:52 AM

to get the most of your money i would install a new engine and part the car out. put the stock IC, twins, and ecu back in and sell the car off for 18k. 68k on a r1 with a new engine could get you a pretty good chunk of change. it would also be eaiser to sell. i think its kinda hard to sell a modded car for 23K+ since people rather buy a cheaper car to begin with and mod it themselves.

I would get rid of it before we had kids anyway, I had decided on that. I would really need something with 4 doors, the other two vehicles I have are a 73 VW super beetle, and a motorcycle... The wife (to be) said that she didn't expect me to sell it so soon, and that I didn't have to consider selling until we have kids...so who knows. I am still riding the fence, I love the car, I don't want to spend any more money on it :D, but like that happens with these! :)

As for what actually happened...I am not sure yet. The car was only tuned for 10lbs of boost, my guess is I had some sort of boost spike. I am doing a compression test tonight. The only thing I saw was that the hose going to the Profec B had popped off (from the UIM that T's into the WG and the controller box ...so the controller didn't have the boost pressure to open the WG....right?
I need to glue that hose on!

TTurboXfd3s 05-14-03 12:19 PM

i think you should just sell it as it is. so, you don't have to go through the hassle of rebuilding it or whatever. and let it be someone else's problem. i'm sure you won't have a problem of selling it.

coop 05-14-03 03:15 PM

I don't think selling it is the problem, it is selling it for a reasonable price...who wants to spend $17k on a car that doesn't run?

cdk 4219 05-14-03 09:29 PM

Yea, but you will have to put 4 or 5 grand and your time into it to make it worth maybe 17k? My guess is more like 14 or 15, and the car has to be perfect. See what you can get for it as is, and I bet it will be around 11 with all the mods you have. 6K is a rough blown engine stock FD 9K is a good car with a blown engine(stock) and it goes up from there. Your car seems to be a very nice car. If its simple a money issue then it may be more profitable to sell as is.

lane_change 05-14-03 10:42 PM

His car is a good condition example....so to think that he would only get $11k for it with all those mods is too low when you say a good example stock one can fetch $9k with a blown motor.

I would guess around $14-15k as is....and maybe around $20-22k with a new motor.

Also, your $4-5k for a motor is kind of high....I would say around $3-4k for a good rebuild or even less if he goes with a Mazda Reman and a port job.

Dave, did you get those compression numbers?

coop 05-14-03 10:42 PM

My car in stock condition with my miles has a $14k book value, and that doesn't take into account the R1 model.
You think that my car tuned to around 400 hp with all the mods and the good condition it is in would only sell for 11k? $12k of upgrades drops the car's value 3k???
I think it is worth my time to have the engine rebuilt and shoot for the 20k mark.
If not, I will part it all out and I have lost nothing. I don't consider time as a cost since I have to have a project going on, might as well be the 7, if not it would be one of my other vehicles.

coop 05-14-03 10:43 PM

I agree with Lane_Change..
an nope, didn't get to the compression tonigh, we were working on cleaning...tomorrow is the plan...
:)

Domestic513 05-15-03 09:44 AM

With all your mods parted out you could probably get close to 8-9k. The car it's self being back to stock (if possible) and with a blown motor for about 5.5-6k. But on the other hand if you want to take the time to do it yourself, dump 2k into just getting the motor. Not counting the little stuff that might break along the way. If you pay someone to do it then you will loose alot in the end. If your situation is a must sell need money now then I would part it out. Just my .02

I know I could use that torque brace and shift boot :D

3isacharm 05-15-03 10:35 AM

if you decide to part it out please send me a pm first and I will take a large majority of the parts off of your hands!!!

coop 05-20-03 08:59 PM

I think I am going to have it rebuilt...then I will get to drive that last 500 miles break in...:)
I did compression, no compression on the rear rotor...none of the faces, pretty good eh? also there was only one compression on the front rotor...
no wonder the car didn't stay running...

Badog 05-20-03 11:03 PM

Coop/Dave,

Sorry about your loss.

Was it a stock port engine? How many miles on it?

Tony

coop 05-21-03 08:15 AM

The engine block was stock, it has/had 69k miles,
I am curious, why do you ask?
