Should I pull the Engine?
Alright, very soon to tackle changing my clutch and my twin turbos on my JDM RX-7 FD. In the past two week I pulled an engine from a Silvia and an MX-3, and both went fairly smooth. Would it be wise to pull my Engine to have easy access to everything or, just do as much as I need to. Any advice? I found a guide for the clutch on fd3s.net but the turbo I cannot seem to find(all they have is for single install). Any pointers? Worth it pull the engine guys?

I would get the car up on a lift or some jack stands and pull the tranny that way.
If you dan't HAVE to pull the engine, dont. If you were removing the flywheel, that may be a different story, but I know many people that have swapped flywheels on a lift without removing the engine. |
Yeah, will also have to refurbish the flywheel, or a good chance, so probably will need to remove that guy too. Get her on lifts would be perfect and I'll look into it, is 18-24" sufficient or not for this task?

if you can get access to a lift and a tranny stand for those heights... then do it that way. your neck, back, eyes, everything will thank you for it.

I've heard removing the turbos from our JDM cars is a natural bitch due to the power steering on the right side of the car.
Someone had a great post recently showing the bolts required for removal on the turbos. If you find that post you'll be able to see if all the bolts are accessable without removing the steering. |

its not the turbos so much as it is the downpipe. Its cramped on a USDM car, on the JDM cars its damn near impossible. BUT its doable... and if you have to, the steering column is... 6 bolts total to pull it out so... its not exactly impossibly to do it that way either. BUT if your going to do work on the turbos, depending on what you have to do, it may be wise to pull the engine.

Honestly, if it were me, I'd probably pull the engine and refresh/replace everything that needed it. At this point I've done it so many times it comes fairly easily, also I *really* hate doing a stock twin R&R with the engine in the car, and that's on the LHD usdm cars.....
