shorten the short shifter!

hey guys.. i just got my B&M short shifter..
it wasnt as short as i wanted. so i threaded a nut down onto the threads until it stopped. then i took a grinder out and cut thru the threads.
i did this until it was flush with the nut. then i slowly backed off the nut.
i put a diff nut on and took it off a few times until it went on without a problem.
it shortened it about a inch.. which looks and feels alot nicer installed in the car.. :)
some of you may have done this already but i just thought of it and figured i would share it..

Can you post some pics of what you did by any chance? I was wondering how to do this. Thanks!

Yeah pics please(w/ the shifter off, too), I'm really interested to see that, I wasn't happy w/ the height of my B&M either, but just dealt with it.

does the b&m shifter ...actually shorten the throw(shift)....or is it just a shorter shifter???

it actually shortens the throw too ... feels alot nicer than shifting with the stock throw.

Shortening the shifter "shaft" will shorten the throw. IIRC, B&M design primarily raises the pivot point, which shortens the throw. Other designs do both.

pics when u can please...

jees.. guys.. its not that complicated.. but i will post pics in a min.
i will just repeat the whole process on a stock shifter.

i am not a professional fabricator by any means.. i just tried this and it worked..
so if you f#ck it up its on you. dont blame me.

I'm surprised that ppl thought the B&M wasn't short enough already. I personally loved mine how it was.

sleeper7 02-26-07 09:38 PM

sorry guys.. i had to go buy a new grinding wheel..
start to finish the whole process took me 4 min. (with shifter outside of car)
and thats including stopping to take pics and putting on my new grinding wheel.
pics will be up as soon as i upload them to photobucket

i loved how short the throw is.. just not the height of it..
so i gave it my own personal touch.

silverTRD 02-26-07 09:49 PM

i know how to do it but i went to see a finished install pic

sleeper7 02-26-07 10:08 PM

i cant show you that pic yet..
(no ppf frame, forgot to get alignment tool to put clutch in... dont worry the ppf is paid for and in the mail.).(i hope) and i will get the alignment tool tomorrow
but here are the pics of how to do it.
step 1. thread nut all the way to bottom of threads until it stops.
http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s...Picture018.jpg
step 2 grind through threads.(make sure you use gloves and safty glasses... its for your own good.)
http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s...Picture019.jpg
http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s...Picture020.jpg
http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s...Picture021.jpg
step 3. grind the remaining threads until they are flush with the nut..(you will grind away a small portion of the nut.)
http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s...Picture022.jpg
step 4,5 remove the nut, thread on new nut a few times to ensure threads wont mess up shift knob.
http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s...Picture024.jpg
step 6. thread on shift knob.(this pic can come later if requested.. however my trans is not in my car right now due to new clutch and waiting on ppf frame
