Shine Auto Project x William's Auto Body FEED Hood
I figured I'd share my hood project with you all to show what is involved. I had the FEED vents molded into my stock aluminum hood. Although this is undoubtedly a harder route, it is still a viable option for those that may be interested.
There is nothing wrong with a full fiberglass or carbon hood, but I was keen on retaining all the functionalities of the stock hood, i.e. guaranteed fitment, obviating the need of hood pins, etc. However, Shine's revised FEED hood was actually very on-point with the fitment in my experience, since it was essentially based off the stock hood's shell. I hit up boss man Ken @ Shine and he came through with an FRP piece of just the vent section. I then brought it over to William's Auto Body in San Mateo, CA to do the work. William has made custom vented hoods for Z cars and whatnot, so I decided to challenge him even further with this :) First, a very measured and precise cut had to be made into the stock hood. http://i2.minus.com/i2KhpUl5OAMRE.jpg http://i5.minus.com/ij9tb0PRYguHJ.jpg http://i6.minus.com/ibrZoE3uJ7313F.jpg http://i7.minus.com/jdJeCltkjdyAx.jpg Vent placed on top for reference, before trimming to fit. http://i3.minus.com/ibysSR2kxELIrm.jpg http://i5.minus.com/iBDBa8BciF2NM.jpg Starting the molding process... http://i7.minus.com/i9sapFHQnEhrn.jpg Smoothing and blocking. http://i1.minus.com/ibczEn5pk3ErAa.jpg http://i1.minus.com/ibcUjAf1u6q7Z3.jpg ...Continued on the next post... |
Primered.

There's still a few more things to do like reinforcing the vents with mesh and I'm going to have the back part of the vents painted flat black. Anyway, hopefully this provides some insight on the possibilities of such an endeavor :icon_tup: |
that's some impressive work. On top of that, he's actually in the bay area and was certified by BMW!
Good job on the project, that's pretty dope! -AzEKnightz |
That look really good, is the middle section all you opened for venting?
|
Thanks guys. The vents were only opened up so much because it was a balance of compromising rigidity. If the holes were wider, then the side areas of the vents would be weaker. Plus, the under structure of the stock hood sort of blocks the vent areas on the sides.
I just like how the FEED hood allows for heat relief, but I'm skeptical on its performance versus other more aggressively vented hoods (a la Scoot, RE-Amemiya). Still, it is definitely the sexiest design in my book :egrin: |
how do you like the rigidity? i have the same vent hoping to install it very soon .. i wish the body shop im using can do the job equally well
|
Looks great Eric! I like vented hoods but dislike hood pins on street cars, looks like you have a nice solution.
|
Won't it eventually crack where the two pieces are molded together (due to the metal and fiberglass princes reacting differently under the sun and weather?
|
looks perfect.
Major kudos. |
Nice build.
|
So nice....Get Shine to make a mold of it so they can start making them again.
|
wow this is better than the original +1 for individuality
|
nice!

Bumping. How is the hood holding up?
|
I just took the first steps down this same path yesterday when I ordered a set of vents from Ken at Shine.
If you are interested, just give him a call and he will hook it up! |

I followed Eric's amazing build and I'm taking my car to the shop on Monday for the exact same hood job.
Besides the 2 year bump If any of you have any build photos that want to share in order to help give some ideas please upload. Thanks |
