Did you swap out the final ratio? if so, what to? what were your opinions of the mod?

i made 488 whp on the auto tranny using stock grade oil no synthetics. stock tranny oil cooler, no tranny shift kit. the damn thing is in perfect shape.

How many miles did you get on this setup before you swapped it out?

I swapped to a 4.3 and it really helped alot.

The biggest problem with the auto tranny is 4th gear. It's a dog of a gear and no matter what you do to the final drive ratio this gear will always be a total dog. If I remember right, with the stock rear end I could get up to 120mph in 3rd gear and fourth went from 120 to near 200mph. The car would pull great to 120mph and then drop the rpm's down really low when it shifted into fourth. The response was so bad, that it actually took longer to go from 120-130 mph then it did to go from 140-150mph.

I finally caved and went manual because I needed more top end power. Not only did I get top end power, but the car was all around better.

lol what kind of horsepower were you running? at 488 whp it was pulling so strong on the high gears. even when i had 360 whp the rpm gauge would move so fast that i over revved on accident on shifts. you gotta have power to gain top end speed with longer gears. 4.3 is good if you have close to stock power. my final gear was powerful i hit 150 mph so fast.

Yes there is a shift kit for the automatic. It was hard to find, i found it out of somewhere in texas but there was a big difference once it was installed. I picked it up on a rainy day and once I left the trans shop the 1-2 shift was so powerful it broke the tires loose under NO power and I still had the 3.90 gears( I would think there's no reason to change if you put this kit in, unless you want both). After that it was a different car I only switched to a 5 speed because i wanted to leave under boost without having a 7k stall. I think for your application it would be awesome since i was already single turbo at the time it was already loosing a little bottom end but since your still stock twins it should be a BEAST:egrin:.. haha
Then if you wanna get into the big boy stuff pick up a PCS trans controller- The Best way to control the automatic IMO being able to control the whole trans from the laptop was fun:icon_tup:

having a hard time believing the stock auto held up to 488whp, all the auto's i have driven were mushy as hell and power hogs even at WOT. i just can't for the life of me picture the clutches holding up to that power level with the cars i had driven.

perhaps you were just lucky and the transmission actually worked properly, most of the time they need tweaks to even somewhat feel responsive.

Where did you get it from and how much did it + installation cost?

lol'ing STILL at those "auto FDs are dogs", people. You've NEVER been in one, I can guarantee you that. Those of us that have them understand, and I will put mine up against ANY similar hp 5 speed FROM A ROLL, and eat your lunch all the way. The ONLY disadvantage is from a dig, as we all know and has been well documented, argued about, etc since Day One.
Simply look at the numbers, we are talking less than half a second difference across the board. HALF A SECOND. For those of you that don't get it...that isn't even an eye blink.

Actually an average reflex blink is 300-400 milliseconds ;)

So I guess the difference is marginal.

you already have a disadvantage with the additional 10% drivetrain power loss. LOL all you want, that is a fact. shifting may be quicker and no loss of boost during shift to regain but even if you handle a similar power car up to 80mph you will eventually lose ground beyond that.

You can find them in the FS section. The parts you need are:

5 speed trans
clutch
flywheel
driveshaft
pedalbox
center console trim
clutch master and slave
4.10 rear end gears.

anything I'm missing?

This. Lol

Bajaman is right, and you are right about the 10% loss, but at 80mph, an auto fd will still be pulling hard. If I race someone from a dig, I will probably have to play catch up unless they have a FWD. I have only raced a few cars in the FD, but it still hasn't lost yet.
