Does anybody make a shift kit for an automatic fd?

You can find them in the FS section. The parts you need are:

5 speed trans
clutch
flywheel
driveshaft
pedalbox
center console trim
clutch master and slave
4.10 rear end gears.

anything I'm missing?

what you need is a pfc and the banzai racing harness for your auto trans. later you can get a level 10 upgraded transmission kit. no need for a swap the money can be spent in other areas. get ur trans serviced with synthetic oil and it will be just fine.. my setup is running great.

I also plan on taking the PFC banzai racing harnesss route.

Ya, im already going to get the pfc and the adapter. Btw, did u use the tune that the pfc came with or did u get it tuned?

jeff p Sep 5, 2010 08:20 PM

yes on the stock pfc map for now. dont wast your money on a swap . a good condition auto trans with the banzai harness can handle over 300 h.p. . use your money on some 4.3 gears like I did its worth it the auto trans woke up with the gears and the car responds very well.

PINTSIZEKILLA7 Sep 5, 2010 08:26 PM

The 5 speed swap is way out of my price range and im only looking for about 250hp anyway

jeff p Sep 5, 2010 08:30 PM

then your fine. but get the rear end gears anyway . its the best mod u can do for the auto trans fd's

PINTSIZEKILLA7 Sep 5, 2010 08:37 PM

Should i get 4.10s or 4.30s? I dont do much highway driving so i dont think it would hurt my gas mileage much.

Just leave the car alone and save your money. You will end up going manual anyway so don't bother.

PINTSIZEKILLA7 Sep 5, 2010 09:58 PM

Im not going manual unless the transmission blows.

So you are going to go manual...

PINTSIZEKILLA7 Sep 5, 2010 11:04 PM

Haha maybe eventualy, but im going to try to make it last.

jeff p Sep 6, 2010 01:42 AM

4.33 gears. even if you go manual its still a good ratio.. if your going to go manual sell the car and buy a manuel car its not worth the trouble.

More like well over 400whp on stock auto. The highest i've seen recently was 488whp with stock auto. I would suggest an after market auto tranny cooler though.

jeff p Sep 6, 2010 10:28 AM

Wow.. 488 hp ? yes an aftermarket cooler would be a great add on even for stock hp.. I am tired of all the auto bashing.. with the banzai harness and being able to add a pfc properly to the auto trans their is no reason for a 5 speed swap .

Agreed. Peeps bashing autos just show their ignorance. A well set up auto can be a force to be reckoned with. And would be my choice for a serious, high HP street/drag car--unless someone gave me a Lenco.

For general purpose use, I will concede that I enjoy the 5 speed FD--but it is not always ideal and there have been occasions where an auto would be welcomed.

OP: Loosening the converter up a little bit can also make a nice improvement (along with the things you've mentioned).

depends on the driver needs.

if the goal is go fast, reliably and in a relative straight line.. then auto wins. always, period.

if you're doing lots of curves, then obviously the ability to micro-manage the transmission is essential.. thus manual wins. always, period.

It's not a question of manual vs. automatic. It's a question of WHAT DO YOU WANT TO DO WITH THE CAR?

----

Now, I firmly believe that the best option for automatic vehicles is to get the PFC and Banzai Harness. Then put on an aftermarket transmission cooler that gets direct air-flow. The stock FD comes with a tranny cooler but a nice aftermarket will have better cooling capabilities and hold greater volume. The question then becomes if one should ditch the auto cooler at this point or to run with 2 coolers. If the stock cooler is ditched, a 2nd oil cooler seems obvious.

To the OP: I'm not aware of a true shift kit for the auto transmission. There have been various mixed results with the Level 10 products; however, no one has been daring enough (or rich enough) to try the level 10 products since the introduction of Banzai's harness. (that I know of)

jeff p Sep 13, 2010 07:42 PM

auto trans

well I dont race or track the car . its just a fun toy to drive around the streets, so the auto is great for me. plenty of power and the car has great looks . it gets a lot of attention because its so clean and in factory condition. no funkey body kits or anything just a clean well kept vintage red touring FD.

hmm.. b&m makes an electronic shift improver kit that just modifys the signal to the electronic vavle body, on the ford AODE it just taps into the ecu, i wonder if one of those would work on our cars? i may call them and ask . i used one on a mustang i had a while back and was prety impressed with it. once nice feature was the ability to turn it off when you just felt like having nice smooth shifts.

what is "loosening up" the torque converter? i've never heard of this.

staticguitar313 Sep 14, 2010 02:29 PM

Unless your unable to use both your legs and arms there's no reason to have an automatic in this car. Its just SO much freaking fun to row through the gears. I mean the pedals are setup so nicely for heel-toe downshifts that your basically begged by the car to do so :)

Ball joint Sep 15, 2010 03:51 PM

I was once a automatic transmission defender. I did every mod I could to improve the car and keep it auto. I still ended up going manual and I'm pissed I didn't do it sooner.

btw, if you do decide to say auto, by NO means ever! switch to non-sequential turbos.

why?

unixpilot Sep 15, 2010 09:52 PM

Because you'd be making the already horrible low end performance of an auto FD much worse.

Thanks to the gearing and crappy torque converter an auto FD can be "pwned" by a mini-van off the line to 20mph.

(cue the F&F powerboosting "I love the HOLD feature" fanboys)

amunoz3 Sep 16, 2010 01:43 AM

i made 488 whp on the auto tranny using stock grade oil no synthetics. stock tranny oil cooler, no tranny shift kit. the damn thing is in perfect shape. although i went bridgeport and the idle needs to stay above 1500 rpms and that for sure cant work with the auto tranny. i always dreamed of having a bridgeport rotary so out with the auto it went. although i did try to make the auto tranny work with the bridgeport motor so i had a custom built 3k stall converter made from level 10 but still didnt work. my auto fd had smoked many many many..... countless cars i am sure going to miss the auto tranny :(
