Seibon hood high at latch
Trying to fit a seibon hood, and I've run into an issue where is high in the middle and low on the sides. I can lower it to where around the headlights it sits low and it still has a gap at the latch. To get rid of that gap the sides are MUCH lower than bumper, headlights, and fenders.
Lower than headlight and fender (shot at passenger headlight) https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...63c94346ad.jpg Same at driver side light https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...5940f73895.jpg Still a gap at latch https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...29987fa67c.jpg Alternatively, if I try to align the sides with the fender/ lights (passenger side, but driver is the same) i end up with a MASSIVE gap at the latch. https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...2242534765.jpg https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...de0743ee3d.jpg I can't really warp the front bumper up that much. I can lower the headlights a bit, and I guess i can try to flex the fenders down a bit. This is the ST hood (Scoot looking one). Surely people have gotten a decent fit? @Montego I know you have/had this hood and felt it was good. Any tips? |
Lower the latch and raise the sides and then check the rear hinge for any preload that may be causing the hood the buckle a little
|
Making sure i understand, your saying i should be able to basically put the sides of the hood in tension to keep them up while the latch is down?
if I have the center of the hood flush like it should be, the hood is 1/4" low where it meets the fenders and 1/8" low where it meets the lower edge of the headlights. Near the windshield it is flush with the fenders. It is the same on both sides (so not high on drivers low on passenger for instance) https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...f3fb6ba3e3.jpg https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...f96b389656.jpg https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...f3af893184.jpg |
Ah.... clarity... I see now. You just need to raise those lower edges. You're going to need to install a solution on those outer bump stops. You can use a nut and bolt as a new stop and then put an "object" on top so its cushioned against the hood.
If you wanted to get silly then you can put a bunch of rags under the edges until it was flush and then heat gun the hood so it took that shape. Keep in mind the hood is actually fiberglass. The carbon is just a topper. |
Oh! So I can (carefully) reshape the hood? Awesome. Thanks I was thinking that wasn't possible.
|
Yes absolutely. Kind of like metal, you will need to bend the outer corners further than flush so it will relax TO flush when it's fully settled.
From now on if your hood is going to be up for a prolonged period, put the hood prop in the center where the latch goes. The weight of the hood on itself on one side will actually bend the hood. It will ultimately go back to its natural shape but it takes about a week...... super annoying to find out on your own lol Please post pictures when you get it sorted |
Don't try to bend it with any tools or heavy force, it will crack. It needs to be relaxed with heat and then shut closed with constant upper pressure where you want it raised. Once it's settled at the new height you'll need to use taller bumpers to maintain the heights or it will settle/sag again.
Just leave it in the sun on a very hot day and then do what you need to do. |
Thanks! I feel a lot better now that yall have confirmed that. I was concerned leaving the hood latched under that tension. I'll get better pics once I'm done, but everything is aligned with even spacing. The front rubber bumps are the only ones that I need to increase the height; the ones right behind the headlights were already at the perfect height.
Only part that's not perfect is there's more gap than I'd like at the front between hood and bumper cover. I need to get the quik locks installed, and then I'm going to fabricate a duct between the front scoop and a custom air filter box. https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...20e09deb01.jpg https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...2107894a38.jpg https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...efddaf2374.jpg |
I just went through this with the same exact hood and just like another member stated you want to lower the latch and raise the rubber stoppers until it's flush. Once you do that you can park it in the sun on a hot day a few times and the hood will relax into that position permanently as the resins/gel coat heat up and soften.

Wow. Two months later I finally got the hood pins installed. Ignoring the wild coloring caused by my phone being excited by the sun's reflections on the fibers, it came out really well. I got everything spaced well. You'll notice there's a bit more gap in the center than the sides on the leading edge, but looking at the stock hood it was there too.

Looks pretty good btw 👍 |
Are you missing the rubber rain stopper on the leading edge of the bumper between the hood and bumper?

Nope, definitely there. Look at post 3's pics and you'll prominently see it. I think part of the problem it visually looks more gaped is because the hood is black while the body is white. I did consider adding in a bit of rubber to fill in the gap more though.

The black strip actually makes the gap look wider on some cars (like mine).
