I used a pair of wire clippers and gripped it and got it out...

Did you have to pull any of the tubes back there to get enough room?

come to think of it.. I just unbolted the entire rack assembly from the shortblock and worked on it that way... Its way to hard to get that damn screw off otherwise!

Where are those bolts at? could i find it in the shop manual?

There ARE screwdrivers for this. Sears has this one that is a rod with a 90 degree angle on both ends. One end has a phillips and the other has a flat head. The ends are about 1" long. Long enough to be able to fit into the screw.

If the screw is on too tight, then you might have to slightly bang it. I used a small chisel. I simply placed the chisel on the side of the head towards where it turns to unbolt, and slightly banged it with the hammer. I was able to get it loose this way.

I used a #2 phillips bit in a small 1/4" drive ratchet. I think this is the best way to get all of the screws out without stripping them, because its pretty easy to push the bit against the screw, and you can get a lot more torque with a ratchet than with a screwdriver.

I also didn't remove the screws on top of the rack. There are two screws in the back, and two in front that hold the solenoid rack frame to the engine.

Mine just came out with a stubby phillips screwdriver and a set of vise grips :D
I had to improvise, I couldn't find my 90 degree angle screwdrivers at the time and my ghetto screwdriver/vise grip devide worked just fine.

I just said f$ck the rack and cut the top half of it out with a dremmel tool!!!!! :D Much easier

I was doing the rats nest simplification mod on Robs site and it gets rid of the rack.

Later,

This is the best way to do it. Then you can get to the fuel rail, injectors, pulsation damper, etc as well. Just remember how that harness was routed when you go to put it back in.

Heres a picture of the Brace i'm talking about. Only the solenoid rack will be bolted onto this as well. Just take the whole assembly out at once and you don't have to worry about those stupid solenoid rack screws.

Me too. No muss, no fuss. Easy as pie. Don't even bother to try a different way.

This is how I did it just today (I had to get to the primary injector distributer) anyways the ones that will not come out, there will always be one or two, I had to take a big old vise grips to. It's very frustrating. But LABEL EVERYTHING, remain calm and take your time you will be fine.

yep this is the best way without having to mess with fuel and coolant spilling everywhere. When you do it once, the next time is three times easier.

Just a note on doing it this way, those are fuel lines in the back. Be careful to clean up what spills out when you take them off and be sure they go back on real tight.
