SAMCO Sport Turbo hoses, worth it?
 

Are the SAMCO Sport turbo hoses a good upgrade? How do I know when my turbo hoses need upgrading?

I'm going to order SAMCO Sport radiator hoses and I saw that the turbo hoses are available, so I was wondering if it's a good/necessary upgrade.

Depends whats in there now. If they are the factory rubber ones, yeah they probably do or will need to be replaced. they eventually disintegrate due to heat and cause erratic turbo boost pressure. I replaced mine with hosetechniques.com stuff.

Good luck getting them from Samco. I've had an order in for the radiator hoses (upper and lower) since Oct 1st of last year! Everytime I call about them, I'm told they'll be in next week. 5 calls so far and 5 responses (all next week). So I say screw'em. They can't be that good!

I bought some FD specific Samco hoses off ebay almost a year ago. They were about $80-90 IIRC.

I have some used samco hoses for sale, with less than 5k mi on them, for $45...

Whats the deal with SAMCO? Are they just plain old silicon hoses? Or are they some super special viton laced rubber silicon compound type of thing?

Supposedly there's fibreglass reinforcement woven into the hose, I got those off a guy that selling them cause he got them for his 1'st gen and they came for a 3'rd... and they let him keep 'em ?? :scratch: or something... anyhow I bought them off him, and now I'm selling them... cause my v-mount uses different samco hoses...

IMO, Samco hoses are a huge waste of money. The stock radiator hoses are very good and are a 1/6th of the cost. As far as the intercooler hoses (assume that's what you are talking about), it would be much cheaper to pick up a used set off the forum and they would work just as well.

These cars are expensive at it is to maintain, don't spend money unnecessarily.

the OEM one is very good quality. You have to remember its been sitting in that heat for 10 years.

i got my car for 10 even but the turbos need rebuild (1,200) and it has about 95,000 miles on it so i will be seeing street port soon.....but after my rebuild it was worth it i love it to death

I purchased the samco radiator hoses for my FD. One of the first things I did with my FD was replace the stock radiator hoses with new stock hoses since the original ones appeared to be in need of replacement. I had to cut the new stock radiator hoses to fit my water temp gauge adapter, and they were pretty easy to cut with a razor blade.

About 4 months later, on a whim I bought the samco hoses and that following weekend, I put them in. They were fucking impossible to cut thru with a razorblade(had to get a ginsu steak knife to do the job :P) They are seriously re-inforced.

They aren't the cheapest in the world to purchase, but they were worth it to me. I've had to remove the hoses from the engine about 10 times this year....most of the time jabbing a screw driver between the hose and the elbow...the samco hoses are STRONG...

If you bothered to read my post, I was talking about the "turbo" hoses, not radiator hoses.

This actually makes me feel better. I have had an order in for Samco radiator and turbo hose that only dates back to Nov 3. I also have been calling and getting the same run around.

In conclusion, ANY hose is better than Samco vaporware.
I also have not identified a decent alternative. I got some of the 2-ply intake couplers from turbohose.com and they did not seem very good. Certainly not good enough for the pressurized side. I am just about ready to special order from a local (CO) outfit - turboengineering.com - and have them make up a batch of 3-ply lined turbo and intake hose. Any other suggestions about where to get high-quality hose is appreciated.

But you can go buy another good quality OEM set over the counter for $45.

To answer your question, turbo/intercooler hoses need replacing when leaking, if they pop-off a lot, or if you just think they look too dry and cracked. You can buy regular silicone intercooler hose from any big-truck supply store. It should cost about $3 per inch and be double walled. It's not application specific and it doesn't have 90-degree bends. The benefit of buying Samco intercooler/turbo hose is that it should fit without any headaches.

If you are talking about this intercooler hose upgrade kit, I can tell you that it's not very good. It's basically just an oversized coupler. If you look at the intercooler-to-elbow piece on the left, it has a decent sized kink right at the bend. During boost, the hose would swell a bit. The surface also got "sweaty" from the oil seeping through it, no matter how many times I wiped it off or soaked it :mad:

The only positive thing about this set was how easy to put on & remove.

I'd get aluminum pipes, since they are only a bit more :)

I ordered the radiator kit from Samco last July, I still haven't seen it....

Dude this thread is wicked old, I doubt he would still have them.

Samco is a UK company and meanwhill known for there long delivery times. Companies who have no stock of common hoses and need to order are out for at least 6 weeks (and that's for delivery to Europe)

These hoses are higly reinforced and high tech, no question.
I would recoment to buy straight pieces and standard bends separately and make your own kit. wil save you a lot of time and money.
