Safe to raise boost without retune?
 

So my car was built and tuned back in 2008 by Banzai Racing it's street ported with non seq. twins and all supporting mods. The car made 359whp@14psi back then. Jeff Osler had it built originally and then it was sold a few times. I called Elaine at Banzai before I bought the car last August and she was nice enough to talk to me about the work they had done and what to check for when I looked at it. Well the motor had low compression(low 80's both rotors) and the car needed lots of TLC. After I bought it I cleaned up some things and installed another set of twins since the wastegate was junk on the original set. The car now runs hard and even starts well heat soaked, eventually I will have it rebuild and go single but since it's running good I thought I would wait. So finally to my question I have a race coming up with a buddy's 03 Cobra making 490whp and I was wondering If I would be safe to crank up the boost on the stock twins when we race? I'm going to have AEM water injection on by then and have some 110 octane mixed in as well. I was going to make some test pulls before hand to make sure my air fuel ratio looked safe. I had thought about getting retuned with the water injection and high boost, but I would rather use that money on drag radials. I'm pretty sure it's all a bad idea but nobody likes to lose. (Sorry for the crazy long post!)

I would not increase the boost pressure without actually adjusting the maps to compensate, that just sounds like a recipe for a rebuild.

You can, if you want to limp or trailer the car home after the race

Turn the boost up and make sure someone video documents the race.

Meth injection will cool the intake charge , the 110 race gas will do no good the ECU does not sense race gas and go mmmm yummy let me advance the timing for you to make use of the race gas .

upping the boost just seems like a recipe for going boom . sometimes its best to wait things out and do things right .

Like everyone has said..upping the boost is not a good idea. Plus, popping the motor during the race with everyone watching or recording it would be bad. You don't want to be the guy in a video that has the title OWNED!, FAILED, KABOOM! and be posted on Youtube.

Get the car prep and tune properly if you really want to race, don't come unprepared and expect a good outcome.

Find out what the car is tuned for. If it is tuned for 14 psi, and you are running 12, then you are likely safe to turn it up to 14.

if you're going to lose, why kill the motor trying to win... a 500whp stang still has a gap on you, no matter if you crank up the boost a few psi or not. you'd have to be to the point of breaking the turbos and engine to be neck and neck at about 375whp. unless he doesn't know how to drive, then you might just win as is.

also remember the 359whp was probably when the engine was still healthy, so your numbers are even lower.

just ignore the taunts to race, he obviously has the advantage over you not knowing the limits of your car and who is going to pay when things go to shit? not him. unless you like being disgraced and promoting the ongoing shit talk about rotaries and reliability. race him when you know the car can handle it.

Well I figured that was a bad idea but had to ask. I guess I will keep everything as is and continue to enjoy the car until the rebuild. The Cobra was bought wrecked by my buddy he still hasn't got it on the road yet.(It will scare the shit out of him his previous car was a 350Z) When we do race it will be at the local track for the hell of it, just not worth risking the season for bragging rights.

most everyone who wins races on a regular basis take it one step at a time, making sure their current level is accounted for and then take the steps necessary for the next level.

Keep your boost where it is and make it a road race or an autocross!!
