RX7 vs supra and book for sale
 

Well it has been 2 months since I sold the rx7 and bought the supra ... Here are my observations so far. My stock supra was just not cutting it for me so I bpu++ the car. dp, intake, manual pressure controller @18psi, boost guage, unorthadox pullies even with all that, the supra just does not seem to have that "hold on here we go feeling" Maybe after a few more mods.

My point is that the rx-7 seem to be faster mind you that the supra is an automatic.

well, what mods did you have on your rx7 ?

cause here's what I'm thinking. If you did have the rx7 moded pretty good and it was a 5spd you have to remember that the rx7 is lighter. Well the Supra is an auto it should feel pretty darn fast at bpu++ . If you really don't like it as much as the supra I'm sure you would have a hard time selling it and finding another FD.

I had the exact same mods ... plus a pfs with keypad on the rex. I was pulling 310hp with the rex, and now I am at 405 with the supra ... but it just does not feel like it. Maybe it is just the weight combined with the auto. I am now getting some cam gears and the greddy pe exhaust. If that does not do it ... I'll be forced to go single turbo.

I'm just wondering why you guys decided to get an auto Supra? I don't think I would ever get an auto anything. Manuals are just so much funner to driver. The only thing that sucks a little about manuals is when you're stuck in traffic. But even that really isn't that big of a deal when you're used to driving one. I like Supra's. I've been thinking about getting one to pair with my FD. If I did, it would definitely be a manual.

Auto Supra rule for drag racing. They are the most consistant cars I've seen on the NIRA circut. A BPU auto Supra will run high 11's, low 12's all day.

I am the same way ... I love manuals! But I love speed and racing more. The simple fact is that an auto supra is faster than a manual. Both from 0-60 and 1/4 mile. That's my game. You may be asking how ( I sure did). The automatics do not lose boost between shifting, and they shift alot quicker than a person could. I am also having foot surgury, but I think I would have gone this way anyway ... plus it is easier to find an auto at a good price.

Thanks for the insight! Most automatics tend to have a shift tendancy towards fuel economy rather than spirited driving. That's pretty much why I don't like them. It looks like with the Supra, Toyota did the automatic proper!

I never drove a Supra but did ride in someone's BPU auto Supra. From a stop it was scary - let alone a girl owned this thing - she took it around a turn and floored it and almost did a 180 - a lot of power. It did not have the race car and quickness of my FD but out of the hole it did have power. I felt like I was in Camry on steroids - so much luxury in a sports car didn't seem right - I guess I'm just used to a go-kart feel.

The auto supra is faster than a stick one? Really? Is the performance specs the same or better with the auto. How about their modding capabalities? Is there any limits to an auto supra with extreme mods?

There are limits too everything ... The auto tranny is good to 450hp, after that they recommend making some modifications to the clutch and cooling systems. The fuel stystem is capable of 500hp, but even thats pushing things. The engine itself would need some strenthing after 550-600hp. Of course there are exceptions .. I know one guy running 600hp with only a single turbo upgrade ... I am just waiting for the "BANG"

The auto Supra is slower than the 6 speed in 0-60 romps and 1/4. In a test of a Trans Am, Supra, FD, and Corvette (all 93s and auto) The Supra did 0-60 in 5.6 secs and the FD in 6.2 secs - yuk! We all know that manual Supras and FDs pull 5 seconds flat but the auto Supra is not "far" off from the 6 speed.

I'm not sure what magazine your reading ... but try a reliable one. I have not seen one 6speed take a auto yet. I will say that you need to know how to drive the auto. You must power brake the launch and pull the trac fuse (traction control), and I'm sure the magazines don't do that. But even if you do not do those things ... 5.6 who was driving? grandma.

I have a stock manual 93 fd with street ported 3mm engine with 18" RH C2's and just bought a stock manual 94 supra TT 3 months ago. The manual supra pulls a little harder than the fd even thought it's heavier. My friend has a stock auto 93 Supra TT (now bpu) and it definetely has a more power stock than my manual supra from standstill. Compared to my stock rx7 (before the rebuild) with 200 rwhp, the auto supra felt alot more powerfull in the high rpms.

I took the rx7 on the track after the rebuild and it performed awesome pulling out of the corners. The bpu supras were killing me on the straight aways though. I can't wait till i get the dp, cat back and power fc in my rex to see if i can hang with the bpu supras. I'll keep you posted. But I love manuals and am willing to sacrifice a little of power vs auto.

T is right those Auto Supra TTs are consistent as hell. I've driven one and it doesn't "feel" as fast as my 6-speed but they do the same exact times every time, no missed shifts, no clutch modulation, just keep the gas mashed.
I just got done some mods on my friends FD and it feels faster than my supra but I guess we'll have to run them at the track to really know for sure... :D
