rx7 fd fails the mot (road safety test)

took the rx7 for its second mot since ive had it and it surprisingly failed! The bloke doing the test commented on how mint the underside was, but whilst under there he spotted a fukd steering rack outer rubber gaiter (drivers side) and he also noticed i had no rear fog light. I thought i might be able to get away with the (lack of) fog lamp as someone told me if the car aint got one, they cant test it?? That menas the ****s down southampton docks must have done a quicky "get it out the door" mot!

Anyway apart from that little dissapointment im going to paint 1 reverse light bulb red (leave the lense white) then run a ground wire to a switch tucked under the dash somewhere. and also try and get that steering rack gaiter done before monday..does anyone know the part number for the rubber steering rack outer gaiter?? Also has anyone had any greif with the mot stations with the painted red fog lamp bulb mod??

I have no idea what you just said but if you need a part number go here:
http://www.mazdaformance.com/rx7.htm

And click on parts diagram. There's a list of PDFs with diagrams of all the parts and their part number.

What the heck is the "painted red fog lamp bulb mod"? I've never heard of a rear fog light. Is this a light for the license plate or what? In the US you do need all exterior lights working to pass safety inspection, including license plate lights.

sorry mate..over here we have an annual test for all cars over 3 years old..its called an mot.. im not sure what it stands for but basically you get an approved garage to give the car a complete road safety inspection test including emmisions. Also over here you need a red lamp on the rear of the car for when we have foggy weather but this crappy bolt on lamp unit can spoil the look of the car, which is why id prefer to convert 1 of the reverse lamps instead!

Don't paint one of your lenses, they end up looking terrible. I had to fit my US spec car with a fog light and it wasn't very difficult. I found an existing bolt from bottom of the car and with that I secured a bracket I got from the hardware (DIY) store. I secure the cheap fog light to the bracket. The light was very discrete because it sat very low but was still visible. My car had a 12V supply in the trunk area because the previous owner had an amp. You might have to run a jumper off one of the taillights. I threw the switch in the storage bins and never used other than to pass the MOT.

I converted my front side marker lights to blinkers, so I wouldn't have to drill holes in the fender for the higher mounting fender lights.

Everytime I think of leaving Illinois again, then I read something like this. I thought Cali was gestapo.

The MOT is not that tough of an inspection, but it is more challenging for an imported car. It is smog plus a safety inspection. My car passed with just adding blinkers and a fog light. Old cars are not so lucky. My old roommate had to buy a complete exhaust for his second gen.
