I didn't know Abercrombie models drove rotaries

domkouki 12-02-09 07:53 PM

mazda will come for him and "take him out" for ruining them lol

lol! Abercromie model. I won't lie, I tried to hit the weights right before the vid. Gotta puff out your chest. This is a deservingly tough crowd. :-D

for the record, I don't have a sister.

I am not as negative about the car as I'm portraying in the vid. I wanted to take a point and make some good discussion on it.

lol again, you're just like me with the mentality. Its not really being negative when you're talking about reality. I have done this many times in the past and got bashed because of it.

Even in real life when i have to explain my car and the fundamentals about it, i have the same approach as in your vid to the people im explaining it to lol. Its not being negative when it is what it is.

As far as your video appearance. If you wanna blow up and have instant results. Hit the weights, then take a scoop of creatine and like 2-3 glasses of water. You'll blow up like a balloon in 20 minutes lol.

Good video for beginners....

Definitely get tired of explaining to people what these cars take to own. I have a DD and a garage, and I wouldn't buy an FD until I had both :D

IE: coolant seals.

I agree here... I am always on top of all maintenance with my car and a few weeks ago I lost a coolant seal. Seemingly for no reason (car has NEVER been anywhere close to hot). O well, it happens.... Now I get to pull it apart and have it ported : ).

Though I do also agree with Montego, other than the coolany seals, if you perform reliablity mods only and just leave the car the hell alone, there is no reason you cannot drive the car every day. I DD drove mine for a while and never had any issues.

What water did you mix in your cooling system? Distilled water or well/tap/drinking water?

From what I've seen the coolant seals don't fail from heat. They go because the lip holding the seal in is weakened from corrosion and lets the seal slip into the coolant channel.

Excellent video! Really makes some good points that a lot of people (as evidenced by this thread) stick their head in the ground about.

*Can* the car be reliable? Yep. If you're a top-notch mechanic, use only the right parts, and do everything with careful attention and loving care. The other 95% of people will be pissed off at the side of the road.

The video is fucking moronic.

I've owned this car for 11 years, and have driven it for four years now without a single problem. It's all in the build, tune, and maintenance. The foundational statement of that worthless commentary is completely flawed: the stock car is NOT reliable, but a properly modded car with aftermarket turbo(s) and all the emissions equipment, vacuum hoses, etc deleted, fed plenty of fuel (and pre-mix two stroke oil), can be stone reliable. As Howard has posted before, the rotary was legend in endurance racing in the 80s, so it's not the engine.

Videos like this actually make me love the car all the more, becuase it's punks like this kid who give up, buy an S2000, and then try to race me (and lose big)

You have a long way to go with that, too, son (I'm 42, bench 320, from MI, and I'd take you on in the gym any day), and one look at the engine bay of the car in that vid is all I need to know you don't have a clue about how to build, tune, or maintain these cars. Here's a hint: do alot less random gum flapping and posting on you tube because you understand nothing. Instead, do alot more reading/talking with vets, and come back when you actually have the money and wisdom to do the job right, otherwise, kids like you just continue give this car a bad name with their parroted "unreliable" bullshit (I've heard it all first hand on S2KI - since I own an S2000). For now, please stay away, buy a used Civic and stay in school, thanks.

Amazing with all the information out there on this car and great members like Howard that we still have this level of poor understanding.

lol. yes to bring this back to topic, I agree with your statement. I didn't intend for you to interpret my video that way. 4minutes is surprisingly short. I meant to say that the car is more reliable stock compared to newbie upgrades. It's very overwhelming to explain everything listed in the forums. Hearsay, facts, and opinions. I tried upgrading my car and did alot wrong. It's not visceral to me until I see the impact of the problems I've created.

I am fortunate to have resources to play with my car and experiment instead of baby it.

I have nothing to prove online, my muscles are Daisy 10 pumps. I don't have any witty comebacks nor do I need any. I would rather focus on the solid point u made instead of the colorful way you stated it. :-)

xzl6b1 12-08-09 05:03 AM

Also, the control solenoids are a huge problem

I agree with your points in the video. I have had 3 rx7s.
1 FC (first NA, then supercharged, and later BNR with Microtech, sold)
2 93 FD (T04R, PFC. sold)
3 current 94 FD, 99 twins, full sequential & emissions, PFS mods, and silicone hoses.

Part of the fun is the light weight of this car, which also becomes a weak point for durability.
Nothings perfect.

Winter projects: rebuilt the transmission (main bearing problem)
ALSO REPLACING 7 OF THE 11 STOCK CONTROL SOLENOIDS, (they failed Dgeesaman's writeup at 250 degrees F, but passed at ambient temp). THIS IS AN OFTEN OVERLOOKED PROBLEM ON A FULL SEQUENTIAL, AND HARD TO DIAGNOSE WITHOUT REMOVING AND TESTING THE SOLENOIDS.

alexdimen 12-08-09 06:13 PM

calmer than you are.

zammm 12-08-09 06:42 PM

The reason 3rd gens are unreliable is because of the turbos. A non-turbo rotary lasts just as long as a non turbo piston engine. A turbo'd piston engine lasts about as long as a turbo'd rotary. Run premix, delete emissions/solenoids/twin turbos and the car becomes much more simplified.

#1 leave the damn car alone and it won't be a pain in the ass

If you want a reliable FD all one has to do is replace the DP, AST, RAD, & vacuum hoses. Stay at 10 psi and do rutine maintenance (change oil, coolant, clean carbon buildup) and happy motoring.

Exactly! Look at my signature. All the above was done to my car except the radiator. When the engine blew, it was my fault. Over boost and low octane took out the rear rotor. Never flooded, never left me stranded, started every time. Hell it even got 25mpg on the highway. Out of the 4 rx7's I've owend (2 1st gens, 1 2nd gen, and fd), my fd was the most reliable. The biggest problem I see is most of you are buying beat-up poor used examples.

The lack of a proper cool down proceedure is what makes the turbos and it's components un-reliable on rotary's. You would be suprised how much cooler the engine bay will be if you stay off boost and cruise at lite loads 2mins b4 shut down. Shutting down a hot engine only bakes stuff under the hood. This is one of the little things I did to keep my car reliable.

Oh yea! Anyone here use a turbo timer? They are counter productive and a waste of money. Ask yourself this question, how do you expect the heat exchangers to properly remove heat from your coolant and oil if there is no air flow with your car sitting up and just idling? Turbos don't take that long to spool down.
