RX-7 rookie.. needs your opinion
 

Whats up people, I have built a few Supra's. I was just about to buy another Supra, until I saw this car on ebay. I have always wanted to get my hands into a RX-7. I have searched and read alot on them. But now I would care for some your thoughts and info.

Seems as though you might have a winner there. Mentions rebuild by atkins..tha thing to check is do a compression test on tha motor. Then inspect tha rest of tha car, test drive it, then decide. Good luck.

Well, I hate the body kit.

Other than that, you can totally disregard the HP numbers. Guy is stretching with those claims.

A-spec's GT35 kit puts out some good numbers and uses quality parts including a real nice exhaust manifold. The one on that car does not use an A-spec kit. A lot of people cobble together turbo kits using ebay SS auto chrome manifolds which tend to crack often. He probably had to make his own down pipe and that probably explains the reason for the full custom exhaust.

Atkins builds decent motors and they test them for compression and water leaks. Ask for the receipts to prove the motor was rebuilt. Also for that price, I wouldn't buy it without a compression test.

Another thing to try and find is who tuned the car. tuning is everything on these cars. Bad tuner = quickly blown motor.

That car looks like a loaded gun. A seriously ugly one at that (the cheap body kit isn't popular with me).

I would have that car checked out thoroughly by a really good rotary shop. You don't do 620hp without some serious work, tuning experience, and blowing a lot of engines. I really doubt this car pushes over 500, and I would not expect it to run very long if it does. Check out the cars built by Lupe and ErnieT on this forum. It might actually be built well, and I'm sounding negative about a car I have no personal knowledge of - but - assuming it is/does what the seller says is a really, really, dumb mistake.

I'd have to agree with Dave on this one. It seems to be a car that wasn't well built. Atkins rotary milled for 3mm apex seals is great, but the rest seems questionable at best.

:squint: and I've never liked the Scoot hood either. looks like someone melted a stock hood and called it "new"

It looks like a kid with rich parents had it....that body kit is a little overboard....I would find out who did all the work on the car.

I'm hardly qualified to say if it's been built well, but going to 620hp is not a trivial task. Those who do it for real (ask this seller for the name of his tuner, dyno shop, and dyno sheet), know that a huge number of supporting mods are necessary. This seller has not conveyed any understanding of what a 620hp FD is about or its cost.

And if you have the dough for that kind of power, you could afford a nicer looking body kit. Tacky and rich rarely travel together.

Lacking any more info, it's best to assume it never has and never will make that kind of power. And if it was even close to legitimately making that power (say 500hp), it's not the kind of car I recommend to anyone just joining FD ownership. A lot of money and knowledge is required to keep a car like that running.

I really appreciate the help guys. I for one am a big fan of the body kits on RX-7s, othe then that I told him if it didnt sell i would like to come see it, if he has receipts and all. He sweems very cooperative. Here was his response

"I have the reciepts for all the parts and work done by atkins rotary, the car was tuned by a tuner in elmwood park nj named acosta racing he specializes in rotary type cars. Yes i have the software so you can tweek the car yourself if needed."


So say i go look at it, compression and leeks looks good, I will tune the car BTW mid 400-500 is plenty of horse, plus i have to get use to it.

But if i go look at it, what else should i check for? I mean quality parts, vaccuum leaks (which i hear are nightmares) .. shifting, what else?

I will take a look Slvr. And i know the knowledge of these kind of forums. I got all my Supra building info from Supraforums. ill TTYL

Check on the 5th gear syncro, make sure there is a recent compression test done (from a mazda and/or rotory shop) 9.0 kgf/cm^2 is basically perfect, 7.0 kgf/cm^2 and below means a rebuild soon.

Check all the interior plastics, the 93s had a bad time of the coating peeling. Make sure the paint is on point (and he did NOT just wash/wax it), again it was a problem in the 93's.


check in the FAQ's for the 3rd gen's for more... there are several threads on what to look for before buying a FD.
