Running a FD N/A?
Hey im looking to remove the twins and want togo single but its alot of cash anyway i can run the fd without the turbos? And if so what will i need to do to get it running for the tine being.
|
Why don't you leave everything the way it is, collect all the parts first, and then (when you have everything) take your car apart and convert it to a single turbo?
|
It will take more money to get it running N/A than its worth. Leave it as it is until you can afford a single. If that's not an option then you probably can't afford the car.

In agrreance with what everyone else is saying. I find it interesting that we went from this
https://www.rx7club.com/3rd-generation-rx-7-1993-2002-vehicles-107/full-re-gt300-widebody-fd-1105687/ To this thread... I have a feeling the attempt to go n/a will be made anyway followed by a part out. |
You just need an NA 13B header ($250) and will have to have a mid-pipe custom made to connect the header to the cat back section ($???) and a Power FC or other aftermarket ECU (stock base tune will be fine) ($500-1,500) and put an air filter ($25) on the throttle body elbow.
Probably want a cat (stock is fine) or all stainless pre-silencer in the mid-pipe since NA rotaries are LOUD. Then you can remove as much emissions and twin turbo items as you want. If you just remove the twin turbo controls and leave the stock ECU you will get codes and probably a limp mode. If you want to run stock ECU you can do that too, just leave all the twin turbo solenoids (rat's nest) in place. Should make 150-180rwhp depending on whether you tune it or not. |
bigtuna And if so what will i need to do to get it running for the tine being. Well, sounds like you need to find out why it stopped running fix that and then get a rebuild which won't be much harder if you leave it turbo. |
Mine runs like a champ n/a. :D

Your car may be running N/A, but you cheated. Bastard.

Don't go confusing the o.p., he may not see your sig line... :egrin: |
I ran my FD na for close to a year back in 09'
bought it non running turbos toast, wiring harness taken off to rewrap. I bought a power fc and a used set of twins. put them on and they just poured oil out. Total junk. wasn't sure if it was oil control rings or turbos for sure bolted a used fc header on, blocked off the oil feed, drains and coolant. cut off the tb flange and welded one on the right size and angle to bolt to FD stock cat. drove it na and no smoke screen. Tried a couple other junk sets and ended up waiting and saving up to have them rebuilt out of 5 sets of bad twins. |
It ran pretty rich I tweaked the tune a bit with the Pfc to improve idle, ect. Was quite slow and very loud. Felt about as slow as my s5 na very I had at the time
|
it could have been even slower than an s5 n/a, because an s5 n/a has a better intake manifold design and higher compression rotors.

I am interested in what a REW would make NA as SCCA has a race class where engine swaps are allowed. Including engines that came factory turbocharged, but with turbos removed.
With no porting allowed in engine, intake, or exhaust, but seals, coatings, balancing, ecu, exhaust are free what could an NA REW make? would it make similar or more power than a S5 NA? Same question with the S4/5 TII 13b minus turbo. |
Gilgamesh I am interested in what a REW would make NA as SCCA has a race class where engine swaps are allowed. Including engines that came factory turbocharged, but with turbos removed. Looks like one that made the most power was 182.4PS or 180rwhp. 180 is pretty good considering the motor still has the air pump, ac, power steering and probably stock coils.
|
Pretty good.
You can see entry #21 was 13B-REW with streetport and 9.7:1 rotors and did 208.4ps. If the Original Poster can use any stock internal with stock intake manifold 13B the 13B-MSP seems to be the best. Also cheapest on Ebay with $1,500 complete engine/trans available. Entry #17 is their project RX-8. It did 180.7ps as RX-8s do and then they were able to tune it up to 220.5ps (217.4rwhp). https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...20eef39c96.jpg Here is the link to their blog on it- RX-8 SE3P ƒfƒ‚ƒJー製作 https://blogs.yahoo.co.jp/anniversar...E3P+%A5%C7&p=6 |
No, I'm sorry.
Looking at the Yahoo blog for the RX-8 it looks like they may have used the Racing Beat intake manifold/adapter to get up to the 217rwhp. Makes sense since the most I have heard of from professional racing RX-8 with stock engine, stock intake manifold is just over 200rwhp. |
The a car with the renesis will have to weigh 3,000 lbs and have a 55mm restrictor.
The Cosmo 13b minus the turbos could be an option as well. The 13B NA weight is at 2650 right now. |
