RPM's and speed

I noticed a shift in Rpm and speed the other day. I was running 5th gear @ 70 mph and my rpm's where sitting @ 3300-3500. It's not slipping I can see that. I hit the gas and and the tach moves with speedo. And today it was back to normal. Is the prob the transmission or the real end. I don't think it's the clutch. Thought???

I'm not certain what you're describing?

It's easy to test for a slipping clutch. Get on the highway in fifth gear at about 50 mph or so. Leave it in fifth and floor the throttle. Let the car accelerate. If the clutch is going to slip that's when it will slip.

umm.....not too sure what your describing or asking, but could it have anything to do with the surface your riding on?

....such as uphill will need more power at the same speed as if going downhill.

Your tach can also be heading out - it can bounce up to higher RPM giving a false reading.

You typically won't have a slipping clutch at a steady cruise, unless your clutch was VERY shot - you'd barely be able to drive the car if that was the case.

true, after installing my single setup and a few WOT blasts, the stock clutch was completely destroyed. I can barely limp around on it now.

The replies above have indicated that it could be the tach itself or its wiring going crazy.

The trans/diff can't cause what you describe, and clutch slippage would not be that steady, and then go away the next day.

Of course, you're absolutely sure you were in 5th? ;)

OK. I've noticed that i'm getting higher RPM reading's than i'm supposed to in any gear @ differnt sppeds when accelerating (high rpm's, lower speed). Also when driving steady the rpm's are sitting @ almost 4k @ 80mph 5th gear. The last several days it comes and goes. I've down shifted to make sure several times to check and make sure i'm in the right gear. I know thats not right. I can floor the throtle and the rpm don't jump so i know the clutch isn't slipping. So it could be the tach?
