rpms drop FAST when i let off the gas

i noticed this a while ago, but its gotten more, how you say, worse?

i was running on the freeway at 80mph. rpms were around 3k. i let go of the gas and my rpms quickly drop to the idle speed of just rolling at 5mph (a little more then 1k)

when i realized this, i pushed on the gas slowly, it seemed as if my car was in neutral. once i reached 3k rpms i felt the car move again.

is this common? the wire that goes from the firewall to the throttle has a rip in it. not the wire itself, but the rubber around it. if you need pictures just ask.

what could the problem be besides that wire? if it is that

Dashpot would be the case if he was in neutral with the clutch in, but the way he described it (80mph on the freeway with the clutch engaged) it sounds like a WEIRD clutch problem. I dont know why the clutch would only engage above 3k rpms tho...does it slip like that in any other gear or from a standstill???

tranny is going out...

my DD did that, when i let off the gas the rpms would drop down to idle.

well, I didn't read the thread carefully enough...I assumed he was pushing in a clutch...forget the dashpot

A lot of automatics will kick into nuetral as soon as you let off the gas, though I've never driven and auto FD. I don't think that'd be that out of the ordinary though.

Yet another reason to never buy and auto in my book...
