Rough/surging Idle with adaptronic ECU

Hi guys,

Ive been a bit MIA while finishing up my undergrad. Anyway, I finally got the chance to work on my FD again and get her road worthy. So my car idles around 800-900 RPM on the stock ECU, but whenever I plug the adaptronic ECU (base map) my idle becomes very rough and will go up to around 1800-2000rpm then drop to 400-600rpm and then the RPM will shoot back to around 1800-2000rpm and then back to 400-600rpm. The car will keep doing this over and over again. When it drops to 400-400rpm the engine almost stalls, it did stall once while doing this. Also the ECU is reading knock levels of up to 50 at around 2000-25000rpm when I give it some gas. While the RPMs are bouncing up and down knock levels are at around 20-30.

What do you guys think is wrong, what should I do?

I had a similar issue a while back. It was the minimum duty cycle on the ISC valve on the Idle tab. I think on the base map it is set to 63 or something like that. I think that is too high and it is causing the car to go into a loop where it is assisting then cutting ..etc

Try to knock that down from 63 to something much lower like 40 and see if that helps. Adjust if needed.

If I recall it is the values mentioned in the first part of this write up.

Which Adaptronic ECU are you using? When I initially received my Select S6 PNP, it needed a lot of work to get the idle where it needed to be! The modular base map is a lot more updated from what it looks like. Just keep in mind that this is a base map and not a finalized tune as every car is different and all need specific tuning to run 100% correct.

I have the series 6 pnp select ecu for the RX7, and the base map for the series 6 RX7 from adaptronic.

Your car needs to be tuned. Are you planning to tune it yourself or take it somewhere?

Im planning to tune myself

I would definitely look at what other people did with their maps and how they tackled idle control and such.
Here's my tuning progression thread on the same ecu and basically the same setup aside from you having BNRs.

This thread also helped me a little bit with my tuning.

I would also look at the Adaptronic ecu manual that you can find through WARI (Idk if they have it through Eugene or not) as it will help you understand what every option does.
I would also look at the Adaptronic youtube channel as it has some useful information.
The Power FC forum also has loads of helpful information for tuning in general.

Good luck and have fun!

I haven't worked a lot with the selects but tune the modular frequently. Here is how I would approach it.

Delete the output function control for the iacv. Then bag the screw in the throttle body (remove the elbow) about 2.5 turns out from full in.
Bring the car to near the idle point with the manual idle adjust screw.
Re-enable the iacv output function and adjust the duty cycle to near the target Idle.
Smooth the udle duty cycle 2D map to make sense at the temp ranges.
Tune the AFR table to bring the afr in range.
Adjust the PID to eliminate hunting etc.
Enable the closed loop and fine tune the closed loop function.
