Rodinette's boost controller
 

hey list,

I'm trying to build the pre-spoll adj. valve. I got the tube to tube valve and 10" nylon plastic tube. I also got some rubber tubing to go from valve to turbo.

I have an idea how to put everything together but only thing is getting pissed! it's the nylon tubing to valves...how do you put it together? It looks like it would leak.

I'm not sure why you have any plastic tubing. The tubing that exits the valve on each side should be copper. You should slightly flare the copper tubing on the inside of the valve. Just a little bit will do. When you tighten the nut, it will provide a nice seal.

Do not install the prespool controller. Install the boost controller first, and try to get your settings where you want them. The combination of boost and prespool valves are very difficult (nearly impossible) to get adjusted properly.

I dont agree w/adam"its e-z". You will need to first hook up the boost controler, then the pre spool. Follow the directions carefully. I only needed to get out of my car 3 times and it was tuned. almost perrrrfect. 10-10-then creeps to 12. "full bpu". Good luck, do small turns when adjusting, or it could get ugly. Oh yeah I didnt look, but if you dont have a boost gauge then 4-get it....If you need some help or some pics just pm me....

Dan, I'm glad you are happy with the way your valves are working. 10-10-creeps to 12 is far from perfect.

When I installed my boost controller, I got a boost pattern of 12-8-12. Pretty good, but not perfect. I wanted to get the transition up to 10, so I installed the prespool controller. I spent about a month trying to get it right. One day it would do one thing, so I would adjust it. The next day something else would happen. I think part of the problem was the longer hose on the very sensitive prespool control.

Anyway, after a month, I said screw it, and removed the prespool controller. My boost pattern is back to 12-8-12, which isn't perfect, but it's pretty close. That's why I suggest that you do not install the prespool controller. Install the boost controller first, and see how it works.

I agree with Dan about the boost gauge. Get one right away if you don't have one.

Adam, I have to say, Ive never had to try to raise the amount of boost on transistion. (probly is a pain in the ass).I put on a mid pipe, and never even tried it without the pre spool.
When I said my boost is close to perfect, I didnt mean the stock numbers. All I wanted was to keep the boost even all the way thru red line, but with such a free flowing exhaust you can expect alittle creep.

Uhhh...10-10-12 is far from perfect? I think its pretty freakin' good! What are you aiming for? Are you saying you don't like the creep to 12, or are you saying its not perfect because you want 12 always, not just on the secondary?

I've got my pair of JoeP ball-and-spring controllers set to about 10-8-10...a brief bit of spiking on the transition to twin mode, and then my boost falls off to 8 up top...not sure why that is but I doubt its controller-related. My primary ramp-up seems slow too, but I haven't figured that one out yet...I may have funky turbos to start with.

Rod Rodinette is the shizzy...I never did figure out that copper valve thing and puting the tubing on there...I ended up just slipping the hose over the threads on the valve and zip tied it in place...didn't move an inch...

Yes, I agree...you should do the turbo and see if you can achieve the results you want before adding the prespool control...That prespool sure makes it complicated....

Ask the guy at the hardware store how to attach the valve to the nylon tubing if you can't figure it out. It isn't that tricky and the valve should come with all the parts you need (cap, compression ring). If you are missing parts, that would explain the difficulty.

I did the boost controller alone to start with and my boost pattern sucked. I dont remember exctly but I think I was doing like 9-6-12 with creep up to almost 15. I quickly did the pre-spool and after about 5 adjustments ended up with 11-9-11 and that is what I have been running ever since. Actually I think it may be a bit off since installing my intake a couple weeks ago. Air flow mods not only change the boost pressure you run at but also screw up the transition. That is why the pre-spool adjustment is needed.
