welds

hey Doc, dont sweat taking a pic.... i took one for you.
Thanks for the pic. The welds look good, minimal undercut, nice penetration and a consistant bead.

I'll definitely keep my eye on this product.

i think it should have been vosko's law instead of murphy's law :D

so you are saying these welds arent purty? i think you are thinking of someone else's welds that look like crap but *should* hold up. ;) i have closeup's of theirs too but i wont post them. :)

My bad...those welds look fantastic! I have a Dragon brace and it has 1 or 2 decent looking welds but the others look like a beginner. Many apologies for confusing the braces!

Agreed. All in favor, say I... :D

vosko 02-04-04 12:48 PM

i think some people missed my point..... my greddy manifold had those nice welds and it broke. my diff brace had normal welds nothing amazing and it doesn't have one crack... just cause it looks pretty doesn't mean its the best

No, Greg Schroeder (Kills forum) breaks the laws of Physics... or would like us to think that he does. Vosko, on the other hand, is more like the proverbial bull in the China shop... :)

That's OK, I will. It's not a differential or trans brace, but I think it illustrates the point adequately... :D

Jim i wasnt talking about you, nor did you cross my mind when posting that. dont know if that is what you read into it...

Isn't said "person" using a flux-core welder instead of a good MIG welder like it appears that rxrotary2_7 is using? I have a brace from "person" and it looks like cranking up the amperage might help a little bit :)

lol, I think it would help if he got the right voltage. The flux core welder he uses is an American unit that uses 120 Volts.....but Japan only puts out 100 volts. When the welder was used on base...WOW. It did a great job.

I knew that, and I knew who you were talking about, so I posted the picture of his 20B cradle... :p:

I'd assume he's referring to mine.

So how's your FD running? oh wait.. you don't have one anymore! So who's laughing now?

i don't have mine but i still have an FD ;)

i don't wish an accident or non running car on anyone. if that is all you can make fun of me for is someone carelessly destroying my car. that is pathetic just stop posting and continuing to make an ass out of yourself

jimlab 02-05-04 01:05 AM

Besides your hypocrisy, Vosko, (it's OK to taunt others, but not for others to taunt you?) the funniest part is that you should know by now that I don't care that my car doesn't run, and it's probably the least effective jibe you could come up with. A close second would be something about using a "redneck V8"...

The welds on that engine cradle are fucking ugly. It is totally irrelevant whether the car it was made for runs or whether a person making comments about the welds has a car that doesn't. The welds are still fucking ugly... end of discussion.

artguy 02-05-04 01:15 AM

this thread is funny.

so whats your thoughts on this brace mr labreck?

i typed a reply but it wouldn't let me post it anyway. i was joking with jim but wanklin has been an ambulence chaser with my posts. i'm glad to see other people are more concerned with my posts than me nowadays :)

My opinion is that if you replace the jelly filled doughnuts that Mazda calls differential mount bushings with Nylon 6-6 inserts, your differential is going absolutely nowhere. :)

Short of that, though, you could use a differential brace, but as with the torque arms for the engine, I'd only use one if I knew for sure that the bushings at that end of the car were in good condition. A brace shouldn't be used as a band-aid to hide the effects of worn or damaged bushings. It should be used in conjunction with good bushings to help ensure that they remain that way and that it doesn't have to carry too much of the load.

With bad bushings, it's going to have to deal with handling much more of the load, and it's going to transfer that load to whatever it's bolted to, which in this case would be the mounting points on the floor pan. Unfortunately, those mounting points were never meant to become a structural member of the drivetrain, as at least one person on TorqueCentral.com has found out the hard way. I'm not a big fan of bolting things to the floor pan that have a lot of stress on them (like a torque arm attached to a transmission mount), which is one reason I chose to use a differential in my car that didn't require a PPF or torque arm.

All that said, with good bushings, it shouldn't be a problem. With bad bushings, there is the potential for fatiguing the metal of the mounting points which could lead to their eventual destruction. And that's all I've got to say about that... :p:

this is absolutly a very valid point and this was never meant to band-aid a problem but to *help* the problem. i do have to dissagree that the diff goes nowhere with just replacing the bushings. :)

Really? Do you own a pair? :D

Once Nylon bushings are installed, the only direction the differential can easily move is to swivel up and down (pinion angle change) which is arrested by the PPF. Lateral and twisting motion is arrested by the stiffness of the bushings. It literally goes nowhere.

artguy 02-05-04 10:24 AM

finally...some answers....

thank you very much.
