Resorting an exhaust
Hey guys,
On the car I have the previous owner has a Greddy SP2 on it. Obviously, the guy let his car sit outside rain, snow, shine, sleet you get the picture. Well the exhaust is oxidized. So instead of having a nice polished finish like they come with it is dull and some parts are yellowed which others (welds) are starting to rust. I was wondering, I was thinking of going 100/220 sanding the exhaust then paint the tubing of the exhaust black with high temp paint and then trying and re-polishing the canister. Does anyone have any tips for me? In my mind I should have the canister polished before I start painting or else I could end up with a PITA. Thanks, Alex |
there are many polishes on the market designed to restore oxidized metal. Painting would be a good option too but youre goinbg to want to use a bit higher grit.

I've restored a number of exhausts. Here's a few tips -
First off, get some Castrol Super Clean and a sponge and clean it thoroughly. Wet it down, spray on super clean, rub with sponge, hose off, repeat. Next, get some Chrome Polish and a rag, and start buffing. With some elbow grease, you'd be amazed at how much crap will come off and how good it can look. If you want to go high-tech, get that new Mother's Powerball. Put it on a drill and go to work. Even better, get some stainless steel cleaner (I found a spray cleaner for stainless appliances in the cleaners aisle at the grocery store) - spray that on, buff it with the Powerball, there ya go. I have taken VERY tired, crappy looking exhausts and buffed them up to damn near new. Clean and polish before you fool with sandpaper and the like. Dale |
Thanks guys for chimming in.
I got some Mother's Aluminium and Mag polish. I am going to take a look at that stainless cleaner if it doesn't work. Although I don't have a Powerball I have a random orbital polisher which I am going to try. What is this Castrol super clean? |
