resonated or non-resonated
for midpipes whats the difference? have any of you guys tried more than one midpipe? if so... which ones are preferred? which one is the best bang for the buck?
|
I have used a MS midpipe from rx7.com, and then I tried a SS resonated from srx7.com. It helped a lot, I'm running NS turbos, DP, MP, and dual n1's, but it seems to have gotten louder over time. I'm not sure if the resonator was meant for the kind of temps our cars produce or what. If you have a loud catback I would get the resonated one.

what does it mean by resonated?
|
the midpipe that is resonated has a chamber with packing to help decrease the noise levels. If you have a loud catback the resonated mp will still be loud, just won't drone when driving.
Tried both the resonated and resonated from Pettit using dp, N1 duals (loud catback) |
makes a huge difference at low to moderate rpm...at full throttle it's loud, because a resonator doesn't do much after a certain velocity
|
Go for resonated if you don't want cops to pay attention to your car .

I'm going to do what my friend Pete did. He made a custom 3 1/2 mid pipe and put a god awful huge muffler in it. I'm not talking about a Borla XR-1 but a HUGE ugly muffler that looks like it came off a UPS truck.
His car is the Blue XS FD and so i know that it doesn't rob horsepower. He swithched from the HKS Racing exhaust to that. The whole system he made is 3 1/2" piping from the turbo out with the big muffler and a universal Apex N1 at the end. With the silencer in the damn thing is pretty quiet. |
when you say it makes a huge difference at low to moderate rpm's are you talking the resonated or non-resonated. and are you saying the difference is louder or softer at low rpms? So is the resonated for times when you just want to open up the throttle and have it loud and idle around town sofly? What would you guys buy if you were not to spend over $200? a used one would be fine if you know anybody thats got one. The only thing that i prefer is that it be ss. I've heard its a major difference when replacing the stock cat, how big a difference is it really (resonated and nonresonated)?
|
got a question...which setup do you guys think will be quieter: a resonated midpipe, or a regular midpipe with a Borla XR-1 in it??
|
I would think the xr1 would be the quitest of the three. Of coarse the non-res MP will be the loudest. The resonator on the resonated MP looks to be a good deal smaller then the XR1. I assume the more packing the quiter. But take my opinion with a grain of salt because I've never heard any of them. :D
