Replacing y-pipe
 

Hey guys, I just got an efini y-pipe and want to change it up with my stock one because my boost is lost everytime I hit the gas, and Ive changed the couplers more than 5 times.

I started the install and ran into a problem there is SO many things I have to take off at this point I'm wondering if I doing it right. Is there a guide for this anywhere? The search buttons doesnt help me at all ive been trying for hours.

it really shouldn't be that difficult. the key is that you need to loosen the charge pipe (intake pipe) that bolts up to the rear turbo. once you loosen that up, you should be able to easily remove the stock Y pipe (assuming you've already unbolted it from the front turbo as well)

not sure if this helps, but heres a photo of when i installed the 99 y-pipe. you shouldnt have to remove any more than i did...also you shouldn't have to remove the airpump (i took that off prior to this install)...

I removed the two bolts holding the y-pipe in place, but if pull it up out of the bolt towers its on a weird angle and I dont want to mess up the pipe it connects with.

any suggestions on what I should or havent loosened?

I took my stock y-pipe off (replaced a bad o-ring on it) and you can remove it without jacking up the car if you had slim hands & arms. If the efini y-pipe doesnt align with your turbos, separate it from its other half and rotate it so it fits. Make sure the o-ring that seals the two halves is in good shape. It's an easy job to do. I just hope your hoses are not rock hard and that they dont break/crack on you.

Well the reeeason I need to jack up the car is because I have no idea where the screws are for the pipe that the y-pipe connects to. I have slim hands btw.

You need to remove the intake pipe for the rear turbo (2 10mm nuts) to get access to the 2 10mm nuts holding the y-pipe to the rear turbo. The rear intake pipe is easy to get to from under the car but sometimes I get lazy and jacking up an FD is a tedious process: jack up one side... place block of wood under tire... lower jack and put it under the front crossmember... lift car... position jack stands... yada yada yada.

The rear intake pipe also has a 10mm bolt right by the ABS module. Remove that one too and take the intake pipe off so you can get to the y-pipe nuts under it. Dont forget to remove the vacuum lines going to the Y-pipe: 2 behind the air pump (from rats nest) and I believe 3 hoses that run to the y-pipe actuator. Remove the 2 10mm nuts from the front turbo and now you should be able to remove the old y-pipe.

Don't forget to check the o-ring that seals the two y-pipe pieces. If it doesnt go in properly, remove it and rotate it so it aligns with your turbos. Put everything back on and hope you dont crack any hoses or break anything brittle. :icon_tup:

Finally got the damned thing out. Lost a couple of tubes in the process, but will definately replace and start on getting new rings from mazda, and redoing the vacuum. Alos going to polish the top piece ;)

Glad you got it out. Check the intake boot thats bolted to the front turbo. Sometimes the smog pump belt can rub through it making a little hole in it. Mine had a hole and I found a good used one here on the forum. If you have any other questions, you can PM me if you'd like.
