Replacement options for the turbo control actuator?
 

Hi has anyone found a reliable/compatible swap for the turbo control actuator? Ive been through 2 oem ones in the last year. Came across a twin port turbosmart one but not sure if the spring pressure is the same.

May work depending on the total distance the shaft travels, spring tension rate, and making sure it was designed for pressure/vacuum on each respective side and is a true double chamber. You would also need to customize the stock bracket or design a new one and customize the rod length. I have had the same stock actuator for years with no problems with higher than stock boost. Do you have the pressure limiting mod in place with a pressure regulator off pressure chamber limiting to 10psi if you boost above stock levels? Boosting higher boost above stock often will prematurely kill the stock actuator.
On my recent rebuild, I did buy and design custom Forge actuators for the wastegate and pre-control. I customized the stock brackets and had custom rods made for only around $175 total for each. These are spring changeable, with a near stock spring rate in the pre-control 8-12 lb. and a 10-14 lb. spring rate in the wastegate. running great so far but still tuning some I limited boost to 12 psi. These are the KAI's so will boost to 18-19 psi eventually with WMI.

Are we talking turbo control actuator? Not pre control actuator or wastegate?

Turbo control actuators seem pretty reliable.....they'd want to be for how much Mazda Au charges for new ones anyhow! Maybe if the heat shield on the manifold or on the actuators are missing then I could foresee issues though.

Have a couple excess here from the twin days too.

Yep running stock boost with all the oem heat sheilds inplace . I guess ive been unlucky then? Just figured that the diaphragms in the turbo control are atleast 20 years so might be time to consider an upgrade. Like the forge actuators on the pre control and wastegate. Will def consider doing the same upgrade to these in the future

You could easily enough measure the turbosmart compatibility with a pressure/vacuum pump, if you had a working original actuator.....can't recall if there''s a travel spec in the manual otherwise?

Biggest problem might be diameter, oem unit is what, ~ 60mm, I'd expect that other one would need cutting/shutting or major bending to work. Aluminium body would put a lot of heat into the diaphragm without good insulation and air gaps too and going by their old FPRs, diaphragm longevity wasn't a good feature back when.
