Removing Gauge Cowl (Meter Hood).
 

Hey guys,
Anyone know of a write-up on how to remove the gauge cowl or whatever that thing is called. The parts manual calls it a Meter Hood I think.

I searched but had no luck.

There are some bolts that hold it on at the bottom, you need to pull back the panel that is right above your legs to get to them. Once those are off the hood is held in with spring clips, you just pull it back (IIRC) and they slide out. The hard part is manuevering the whole assembly around the steering column between the windsheild :tonque:.

I actually only need to lift the part of the cowl that is closest to the windshield about 1 inch. There is a peice of material coming out from under it and I just want to tuck it back under the cowl.

Don't bother, The hood is too fragile and you are VERY likely to break something that's worse than the piece of tape that's sticking out. I've had mine off several times and the first time I cracked the hood. once its unscrewed it slides straight back towards the steering wheel (not up).

It is not tape.. It is a thick peice of fabric (almost looks like leather) and has a staple in it. But I know what you are saying. I have done more damage than good when trying to do something like this in the past. LOL

and yes, pull back, just like I said ;). If you are careful and don't pull the hood in directions it doesn't want to go you should be alright. You live down south? probably not terribly cold? your not likely to break anything if your careful and gently pull the hood back. The part that really breaks stuff is trying to squeeze it between the steering column and the windsheild, if all you have to do is get it detached to tuck that peice of whatever back under you'll probably be alright.

Well I went out there and took a look at it. I decied to take a Exacto knife and cut away most of it. I couldn't get it all but it is way better than before. If I ever have to remove the hood for any other reason I will fix it 100% at that time.

Good writeup dale, sooner or later i'll get around to doing some detailed how-to's, when I have the time :tonque:. Problem is I get halfway through the job and forget to keep taking pictures :lol:.

I followed your instructions.. got the gauge clusture out, also decided to pull the stock radio while I was at it so I wouldnt have to do this again since I was going to replace it anyway.

I am also keeping everyhting apart for now to make wiring up of the keyless entry system easier and even my Boost, Fuel Press and Wide Band o2 gauges.

Mine was a mother bear pain in the ass to get out...those clips on the 93's someone said are notourious for needing superman strength to get out. I really had to pull hard to get them to let go, and the entire time I kept thinking over and over "I am going to break it, I am going to break it" :lol:

LMFAO! That was exactly me.. when it finaly broke loose I could have swore I broke something but lucky for me it just came loose. :cool:

i've pulled mine twice, it's not all too bad the second time around. my interior looks just like yours, except i just installed a new steering wheel and turbo timer, just haven't put the rest of the crap back in yet (waiting to get more parts!).

oh, and that sound was terrible for me too. i spent what seemed like forever looking for whatever it was i thought i might have broke.
