removed and welded double throttle assembly with pics!!!

hey guys i just wanted to show you what i did over the weekend! sorry i didnt show step by step pictures for people that dont really know what they are looking for. yet someone can upload the pictures and highlight the spots i welded shut.

there were three holes left by taking the shaft out so i kind of bothered me to just cap the end off with a block-off plate and leave the other holes to distort airflow, so the idea came to weld them shut! i'm a professional welder so this wasnt really a problem except getting all of the metal clean! there were a total of 5 welds to be done, then i did some light porting/smoothing of the overall area. i removing the excess weld and some casing lines in the midst of the time.

i love doing porting so i will be going in and taking out some more of the little lines and some of the bumps for the bolts that go further into the manifold. if someone wants this done contact me and we can work up a price if you want other areas capped off. well heres the pics enjoy!!!

Where did you get the block offs for the double throttle? :)

Damn, I just need that bigger one. Can I buy it separately?

except the one where the shaft goes in! thats why i welded that bitch shut :)

VegasFD 08-22-06 07:17 PM

PM Jason, he'd probably sell it to you separate.

mono4lamar 08-23-06 06:34 PM

i recieved a couple pms asking where the holes were. so i took my spare mani out and took some pictures sorry about the contrast. these should help you figure how it disrupts airflow!

also for the people the specs for welding i used...

5356 fill rod
1.5 Lanthanum tungsten (gray band)
pure argon gas
40lbs of shelding gas pressure

mono4lamar, you might as well chop off the section that seperates the two openings. Very nice job by the way.

Thats the first time I've EVER heard this suggestion .... and I like it! Wow, can anyone give me a reason why this would be a bad idea?

hsitko 08-23-06 10:03 PM

Well, i dont think its a bad idea, but i just dont think that it will make any difference. The air is already going through the throttles that are that shape so i dont think it changes anything. I didnt have to weld anything with the block off plate that i got. I dont know what it was that you had to weld. Anyway. Sure is nice getting rid of all that crap huh?

I've done this on a few UIMs. Instead of 3 small holes, I have one large triangular shaped one. No idea if it made any difference :)

shelbyinyoface 08-24-06 12:10 PM

can u keep us posted on how this works out for u

mono4lamar 08-24-06 06:57 PM

chinaman i believe taking out the center of that section would disrupt flow as it directs the flow away from that v infont of it. that wall keeps the projection of the air to each side so it doesnt slam into the wall and recirculate disrupting airflow... (did i just say that twice :) )

rich hows that huge triagular hole work for you haha... can i see a picture of that i cant even imagine how much metal dust you must have been wearing after doing that!!! i can surely keep you updated on this.

the reasoning i removed the double throttle assembly is that its purely clutter on the manifold that was not needed. the reasoning behind welding everything was that there were holes left from the shaft being removed. i wanted to get rid of the shaft and plates because they are just in the way of the passing air.

on this page you can see a write up on removing the assembly. http://www.rotormafia.com/dtc/

HSITKO if you look closely in the first picture under the left top tb bolt you can see one of the holes that i plugged.

^^Mine looks just like that. No triangle as I stated earlier, I guess I got carried away :D. I'm honestly not convinced it's a worthwhile 'mod'.

Probably will be doing a dyno test here shortly. Stock vs Ported UIM and Ported T-body:

mono4lamar 08-25-06 06:07 PM

yeah def get that dyno... im wonderin what any work will do to the stock setup. this winter i'll be playing with some non cast aluminum... hint hint ;)

GoodfellaFD3S 02-02-07 06:49 PM

bump for dyno results!

Tanjo 02-04-07 12:09 AM

Anyone ever done any work on the throttle blades themselves? Knife edging them or blending the center bar into the blades a little better?

KINETIK_FD3S 02-04-07 08:38 AM

nice work mono4lamar, what machine are you using?

RX7 RAGE - let me know if you still need a block-off plate i can make you a nice overkill one.

Rotarded - let see some numbers!

mono4lamar 02-04-07 11:58 AM

using a brand new miller 250dx syncrowave! :) its oh so sweet!
