Remove potentiometer after linearizing temp guage?
i am about to linearize my temp guage, but I had a question for those of you that have already done the mod.
after you calibrated the potentiometer, have you ever had to change its value again? i am asking because i wanted to replace that whole potentiometer/resister box with a single resistor (or a few in series). basically, i would wire-up and calibrate the pot according to the instructions. then i would use an ohmmeter to measure the resistance of the pot and permanently replace it with a resistor(s) of equal resistance. this way i won't have to have that ugly box in my engine bay and i also won't have to worry about the potentiometer setting being modified by accident. i plan to use the 25ohm resistor (237F) for initial calibration to be on the safe side. i'd appreciate any feedback on this. |
also, how necessary is heat shrink wire cover? is there an alternative that doesn't require a heat gun?

ive done this on two different cars. i used the potentiometer to calibrate the gauge and find the resistance value i needed then i swtiched it out with a resistor. i think i actually had two resistors in series and one in parrallel with ground shrink wrap is the cleanest but electrical tape works just fine.

great! thanks for the feedback jury. i feel better about doing this now.
btw, what resistance value did you use for calibration (the 22-25 ohm resistor, NOT the one you replaced the pot with)? and what coolant mix do you use? |
