Removal of airpump whit cat still in?
 

Well I’ve done some searches but I really don’t see anything aside from "your cat is already gone so there is no point for the air pump anyway". Can you remove the air pump while I still have my cat? (pre-cat is gone) I don’t have to worry about emissions testing (yet).

Also, I just ordered a block off plate kit, (doing sequential simplification) does this kit have anything to do with the air pump? I read that you need to plug some hoses I think? Also, I read this not too long ago but I can’t find it again...what belt will fit with the air pump gone? I can’t really afford the pulley kit yet. Soon though....soon.

And on a side note, I’m a big fan of my stereo and my A/C (this is Florida damnit) and as I understand that a pulley kit will under drive the alternator and compressor. Will this adversely affect me? I run 2 JL 10”subs.

Sorry I'm kind of bringing up beaten down subjects lately, but other posts that have the info I need are scattered and dealing with other things. I dont think it's a good idea.

if you remove the air pump while you are still running the stock main cat, you are reducing its life span significantly. the air pump pumps fresh air into the cat at 3K RPMs and below for it to function properly. you also will not pass emmissions without an air pump...but there are always ways around that. ;)

bottom line...dont remove the air pump before you have gotten rid of the main cat.

Because it's a useless piece of shit. :)

weight reduction. if you reduce the weight of the car, all aspects of performance benifit from it. the airpump is a whopping 9 lbs. :)

some poeple claim that it makes noise after a while. an air pump whine is sometimes heard when under 3K rpms while the pump is still pumping. also, it acts as a parasitic loss while you under 3K since it is run off a belt, but that does not matter since it is inactive durring WOT or above 3K.

Definitely don't remove the airpump while running a cat. I'm also with Dragoneer, I don't understand why so many people go to the trouble of removing it when it only weighs 9 lbs and only operates below 3000 rpm. Oh well, to each his own.

also, its one less thing to clutter the engine bay.

...but it is still not wise to remove the air pump it until the cat is eliminated.

I had done this in the past with my T2. But, I had the 3" turbo back with a h/f 3" cat. I actually liked it because the "smell" wasn't as bad.
