Relocating stock BOV to stock intake elbow?

Has anyone relocated the stock BOV to the stock intake elbow - almost like the greddy elbow w/ BOV flange?
I thought I might "shave" my "Y" pipe sections (front and rear) of any nipples so this would require the BOV being relocated. I remember reading somewhere it's better for the system to have the BOV as close to the throttlebody as possible - something about minimizing the back flow and reducing turbo lag. I'm not really needing an upgraded BOV right now so I thought I might just relocate the stock one. Many people have used the AWS connection on the stock elbow to relocate the stock BOV. I would be extremely surprised if you noticed any performance difference at all.

ah i see. i guess that nipple on the stock elbow is about the same size... maybe i'll just use that instead of adding a new nipple

Putting the BOV where you have in the picture may get in the way of checking oil, and changing the filter.

i think i'm going to do this. we'll be able to really clean up the "Y" pipe sections and it might help out with flow. |
Flow of what? The BOV is only open when the throttle is closed.

im taking about the airflow within in the pipe. when there are holes in the pipe (from the various nipples) im sure they still cause turbulence in the airflow...thats what i was wondering about. |

Changing the shape of the Y pipe and removing the nipples is not a waste of time . I have modified both styles and the difference is noticeable .I do not know about the divider being better or not .

lol we'll i've got the motor out of the car and everything off it, i might as well clean up the parts and try to maximize the efficiency of the parts while they're off.
reasons for chopping off the extra nipples and welding them up: 1) looks better having them removed vs. just putting caps on them 2) might improve airflow by reducing turbulence i'll let you guys know how it goes. |
Either way... it's been proven that the most optimal location af a BOV is near the TB as the air circuit is already being filled by the turbocharger at vacuum. When the BOV closes, the turbo needs less time and effort to refill the air circuit to get back to pressure. So yes, there it helps.
If you are goin g to notice this at stock boost levels? Probably hardly, but why not.. all small bits help... |

I've lost all faith in humanity and find that strippers (hookers n escorts too) are on a completely separate playing field: no where else do I actually get something I want when I pay for it! :shocking:

A number of years ago, I had the opportunity to sit down with Corky Bell (who is the MAN on turbo systems) and pick his brain. According to him, BOV placement is really more of a packaging issue - you put it where you can fit it. There might be some difference putting it closer to the throttle body, but it's not as big of a deal as one might think.

I know a lot of people may not agree with me, but really if you're not running a ton of boost you don't really need a blow off valve. I mean, it wouldn't hurt to run without one, even the stock one, until you could afford or pursue an aftermarket one. I figured you'll be in break in period right now anyway, why bother with it?
However, I will say the way you have it mounted in the previous picture looks clean and well done. Either way, good luck. |
I've had that hole plugged in the ghetto-ist way possible ever since I took out my AWS. Now I've found a good use for it HAHA, I never even thought of that.
