Which reliability mods?
 

I'm probably going to go for an FD soon. I'm going to get one with under 60k miles all stock. Which reliability mods should i get? Please list in order of importance.

Replace/eliminate the AST(Air Separator tank), get a downpipe and a boost-guage.

How do you know you'll get one with under 60k, stock? Do you have one already lined up? Finding a good example is not that easy.

As far as order of reliability mods, you'll get all kinds of answers.

I would do:

*perform full 60000 mile service on the car (unless there are good maintenance records). This way you will know that you have good filters and fluids, as well as general condition of car.

*replace stock AST with aluminum AST (Pettit, RX7.com, etc)

*replace pre-cat with downpipe

*get boost and water temp gauges

That's it.

A lot of people will tell you to get a turbo timer, I think it's a waste of money. For one, if you drive the last couple of minutes w/o boosting, you can shut the car off fairly quickly. Two, I can wait.

Also, people will tell you to replace the radiator. I say why? If your stock radiator is in good condition, why replace it. True, when my radiator goes, I will replace it with the Fluidyne, but I don't see the point of ripping out a perfectly good radiator.

Fan mod: Another item people will recommend. Again, I say why. When the car is shut off, the coolant is not circulating. So the fans are making the coolant in the radiator cool off. That's about it. There is a more advanced type of fan mod that allows you to turn on fans whenever you want, this is better. Still, you can accomplish pretty much the same thing by turning your parking lights on.
