Relay Test

The FSM is kind of cryptic. I wanted to test some relays. It says apply power at the bottom spades then test for ohms at the top spades. SHould I just use a jump pack to send 12V through? Am I reading this all wrong?

A jump pack is probably overkill, although it will work. (If you short the jump pack, Bad Things happen). I usually start with a 9V battery for testing stuff like this and if that doesn't work then I bump up to a battery or other 12v source.

Anyway, a relay is pretty simple - two connectors are for power, and two connectors are the switched connection. The FSM says to test for ohms on the switch connection with the power on and off. You're only looking for continuity, since all you're doing is verifying that the 12v power opens and closes the switch. So a test light would also be sufficient.

If you dont have a test light or a meter that has a continuity setting (with a beep), set your meter to ohms. With the relay open, you should read nothing. With it closed, you should see zero on your meter.

Good luck
