Refinishing interior bits
When you guys have the gauge cluster, HVAC panel, shifter panel and door plastics refinished what are you doing exactly? Are you taking them to a body shop and having them sand and repaint them? Is it an interior upholstery shop or other specialty shop? thanks |
It varies based on each persons goal. This thread has several examples with the approaches that were taken.

Your friend will be SEM Paint - not automotive (exterior) paint.
Landeau Black for a nice smooth finish Black Textured Coat for more of a 1994+ textured finish. Get a can of each and play around with what you like. |
I used black Plasti-Dip. Believe it or not, it look very good and is a close match.

i would like to see what SEM texture and or Plasti dip looks like next to 94 OEM textured panels. i have one piece in my car that isn't 94 textured and i want to see any results before painting it or buying it new.

I used SEM Landau Black with sand free adhesion promoter (abs plastic) on my 93 First, I used denatured alcohol to remove the finish. Then I sanded with 600 grit sandpaper. After the panels dried I used sem paint prep then shot 1 medium coat of sand free. Before that dried I sprayed the first coat of landau black. 5 coats later the interior was finished. I am very happy with the finish and durability. So, to redo a 94 finish, I assume you should leave the texture as is and shoot over it? Clean, adhesion primer and the SEM Lanau Black? |
To maintain the originally texture ? I guess thats the only solution
what i used that comes real close is SEM chip guard paint. spray at twice the normal distance so when it hits the surface it is drying and leave the texture feel than use Landau black |
Okay, to clarify what I am asking - I have 94 interior bits. They are in pretty good shape but I'd like to freshen them up a bit. Can I leave the 94 finish as is - without sanding it down or
removing it - and simply spray SEM adhesion primer and then Landau Black over the current 94 finish? Will I end up with the 94 texture as it currently is with a new coat of black? Seems to me this is way to go for those that have 94 bits but thought I'd ask the experts. |
I wouldn’t use the adhesion promoter on the 94 panel. It slightly melts to plastic to aid in the first coat adhesion. On the 93 panels it bubbled up the old finish where I hadn’t removed it completely. I think the adhesion promoter would marr the finish/texture of the underlying panel. I have some 94 door panels I’m not using. Let me try spraying them and I’ll get back to you with pics |

The 2 rear tower cover. Mine was fading to white due to 24 years of sun exposure, i used regular water and washed it out dry with micro cloth. Applied sem adhesive promoter for plastic and used SEM interior black. I just did a few thin coats and it now looks brand new. No clear nothing it blends in with the rest of rear panels in direct sunlight you can not tell the different

Below are pics of the door trim. I did not sand or remove any finish on the trim. I prepped the left side of the trim with 38353 plastic prep then shot 2 LIGHT coats of landau black. The right side of the trim was sprayed with 1 medium coat of sand free and 2 light coats of landau black. Adhesion with or without sand free seems adequate. I could not scratch the paint off either side with a finger nail after a cure of 12 hours. The application of sand free did seem to flatten the texture of the panel slightly but I don’t know if that will show up in the picture. As with anything paint, prep is key. I think the best end product is to thoroughly cleaning the trim, use paint prep, and apply 2 light coats of landau black. |

Thanks so much for doing this. I really appreciate your time and expertise. While both look good, I do see what you mean about the sand free slightly flattening the 94 texture. So, I agree, the best route is to clean, use the 38353 plastic prep, and then two light coats of landau black. I'll give this a try on one of my trunk pieces and report back with the results. :icon_tup:

I decided to give this a try since my plastic parts were looking faded. Started out with my passenger side panel first and then the ash tray. First step was to clean with really well with soap and water, then used the paint prep spray, sand free before the coats, and 3 coats of the landau black. I did a light coat for the first two sprays and then a heavier coat for the last spray.
