Red vs. Silver

Both colors look good on the 3rd Gen, I can't decide which one is better for me! Red is more sporty and sharp, but silver looks really cool. What do you think?

Mahjik 10-06-01 08:37 PM

Personally, I'm not fond of Silver.

I wanted to get a Black RX-7, just couldn't find one, so I got a red one. My last 3 cars were red (one was a 300zx).

I don't mind red, even when it's a little dirty, it still looks clean from a distance. Other colors don't seem to be able to hide dirt all that well.

I kind of like that since sometimes I'm just too busy to keep it clean. ;)

JConn2299 10-06-01 09:02 PM

I bought mine new, and so I could have gotten either color. I seriously considered silver, but when I looked at a silver FD it just didn't seem as brilliant or as metallic as I expected a silver to be.
It certainly wasn't the kind of silver you find on a Mercedes or a Porsche.
On the other hand, the red I chose isn't the greatest either. Even the Miata red is a deeper shade of red than what's on the FD.
The FD red is shaded a little too much to the orange side when compared to say a BMW or Ferrari red.
I'd go with the red, but be prepared to give it a good polish and wax job...anything you can do to deepen the lustre of the color.

When I bought my 93 MX-3 I saw the silver w/red interior in the showroom and fell in love......4 years later, I sold the MX-3 w/105,000 miles and bought a 93 VR Base model w/ 49,000 miles..I now have 116,000 miles, have repainted and modded out the wazu.......I still remember that first time I saw the silver.....but I love my Vintage Red.http://www.z32.org/unsorted/Foz::sRX-7.jpg

atihun 10-06-01 09:34 PM

Class....

Plus metallic paint tends to fade much less.

BrianK 10-06-01 11:03 PM

mm hmm... red is more sporty, silver is more classy. There are less silver 7's than red ones, and the red tends to fade.

That being said, I'm still a bit torn - the red looks really good, and there seems to be less red cars on the road in general. All but one of my cars has been red prior to my 7 (which is silver)... I was trying to decide the same thing when I made the purchase.

I'm happy with silver... If I had to do it again, I might go with red on black. hard to say tho. the silver looks really good. :)

rx7eaven 10-06-01 11:30 PM

I love black, the last 3 cars that I have owned have been black on purpose. Howeveer that is not the question here. I would go with red. I like 'em, much more sport looking. Honestly though, it is a personal decision.

It took me 6 months to fine the FD I wanted. Silver Touring with black leather. I kept running into the red leathered models and the red exterior models, but yes, the VR FDs are MUCH more common than the silver ones.

mazdaspeed00 10-07-01 02:32 AM

its all about white......

DeNguyen 10-07-01 04:04 AM

silver is a good lookin color, but it looks real dull when its not SUPER clean

ZoomZoom 10-07-01 08:13 AM

When I was car shopping I was trying to find a Silver one. I drove a silver and a red and loved the silver. The red just seemed to common and I got the FD because of how it looks and because its a rare automobile. I didnt find the silver one I wanted. Silver with Black leather Touring with R1 spoilers. So I bought the Black Touring with R1 spoilers. I dont like the Tan interior and wish i had waited to get the black interior. But all in all I like the black. When its clean nothing looks better. It just shows every spec of dust. The red and Montego blue are my least favorite. Yellow and white look good but I wouldnt even own one. I would feel too ricey in the yellow and too plain in the white. Its either Silver or Black in my opinion. Silver doesnt show dirt and its so rare its always a good choice. Just find a good condition car first before you decide for sure on color.

duckyjp 10-07-01 10:35 AM

I like the silver. (Although not as good as black) The red does seem to fade a lot (especially on the spoiler and mirrors so it doesn't match the car). I think silver will look better longer. Doesn't show dirt or imperfections like scratches as much and won't fade as easily. I considered a silver one but I just love a bad ass black sports car. I agree that it looks more classy and would add futuristic in a way.

the original red paint is amazing, it is soo red, especially if you put it next to another red car (911). its too bad there arent any original paint red cars left, that color is impossible to duplicate right

Actually, whenever my car gets dirty, it is hard to tell, and it still looks very good, not dull. On any other color, red, black, m.blue, they look dirty with any dirt on them or rain spots.

BTW, in the Parts for Sale, I'm selling a MazdaSpeed Replica Fiberglass Vented Hood, if anyone is interested. Hood for Sale

Thanks.

IMO, i like the black rx7 that have black rims with a machined lip. Now that would like nice.

By the way, yellow R1 is my favourite too (I might prefer it over red or silver). But I don't think it's easy to get one, like the silver R2.

RyanREX 10-07-01 04:01 PM

I got the answer! Yellow. I want a yellow one if I ever get the money for a new one. It looks like a bat out of hell!:D

dis1 10-07-01 11:35 PM

Well other than Yellow Silver is the best. Red is common on sports cars and lost it's coolness about 10 years ago. Black shows every water spot and scratch but can look good. White is nearly impossible to keep looking nice. The blue... well I'm partially blue green color blind so wouldn't know but not many people rave about it.

The silver is so easy to keep looking good. My friends think I wash it all the time but truth is maybe once a month. It hides the dirt and with the clear coat is hard to scratch or damage. Even dirty, unknowing people ask what year it is and then take a guess with year 2000. Not only all of this but the paint matches the wheels. It might sound stupid but think about black cars with black wheels. Cool right? Well everyone is use to it but silver cars are the same way.

As for yellow it just stands out, the way the Rx-7 was meant to be seen.

Mach2 10-08-01 09:11 AM

I think the best color would be SILVER! Want to know why??:D Besides that though I think it just makes the car look perfect. It accents all the right things and hides any little imperfections. Plus it does not show dirt at all. I can leave it 2 weeks without washing and you wont be able to tell from a couple of yards away. I just love the way it shines on a sunny day after applying a fresh coat of wax. Nothing like it! As for the red I think it also looks real nice, but like the others said, it does have some problems. Fading is probably the worst one of all and is hard to avoid considering that morst cars are 8+ yrs old, and some spent most of their time outside(unfortunately). I think you should pick which ever looks best to you! Btw, Silver is a lot harder to find. Good luck!

I own a black one, but if I didn't get that I would have gotten the silver. There are way fewer silver 7's than red. I see those everywhere. Nevermind the fact that I almost bought a red one. I don't know, I like them all.

JConn2299 10-08-01 02:16 PM

There is a red car on the cover of every major book written about the RX-7, including the new one coming out this month.
There is a reason for that.
Publishers are trying to use the most attractive and exciting picture they can find so people will be enticed to buy the book.

WRONG!!!!

Red just pulls the eye towards it first. The next time you go driving, just glance over towards the oncoming traffic, don't focus just glance, and you will notice that if there is a red car among them, that will be the first you will see.

That is why cops tend to pick them out, not because they are red in color, but because the red color attracts first.

vosko 10-08-01 02:35 PM

i wanted either silver or black. just happened to find a black one i wanted after a year :D

Kevin 95PGT 10-08-01 02:55 PM

i agree with someone else that posted, silver with red leather is the absolute definition of purity IMO. The silver looks sooo good on this car and I love the way all the lines seem to change and reflect when the light hits it. The color really emphisizes the beauty.

I don't like the red as much simply because I'm not a fan of non-mettalic red. If it were a metallic red, I think this thread would be very different.

And I don't really care for the black because it always looks dirty to me and I think it hides some of the lines. It makes all the details harder to see.

See my post? You'll need to re-read it, because your comprehension and rentention is low.

See the word "attractive" which I used?

Thanks for helping me make my point.
