Rebuilt or rebuild?
 

I have a 93 rx touring model, standard, with 62k on it, should I rebuild my motor or buy a rebuilt? Dealership cost is $2800 on a rebuilt and 6k installed, also what else should be replaced while the engine is out?

Is somthing wrong with it?

Never go to the stealership and have them do any work. Take it to a rotary specialist. They are always cheaper and typically give you quotes and advise on things that you should replace when getting your motor rebuilt. Oh well, it's your money.

Or you can rebuild it yourself. It's not that difficult. You just need time and patience. Also, get FSM or a video on how to rebuild the engine. It shouldn't take too long.

If I were you, I would pull the motor yourself, send your core off and get that rebuilt, and then put it back in the car. But that's just me though.

Do NOT bring it to a dealership. Where do you live? Go to your nearest rotary specialty shop and have them take care of it.

No rotary shops near...
 

I am in Salt Lake City, and cant find a shop anywhere, the compression is really low(I am guessing), it has no power, lots of back fires, cant even go up steep hills

^^^ I had the same problem when my ignition coils, plugs, and wires needed replaced.... Hopefully it could be something that simple.

Unfortunately, a lot of us live in towns with no rotary specialist near by. That said, the absolute worst place to take these cars is to Mazda.

People who have taken their cars to Malloy Mazda was disagree with a lot of you. Dealerships are no worse than some of the "specialty shops" that I've seen some work come out of...

Basically, if you are going to have someone work on it, make sure they have worked on RX-7 quite a bit so they are familiar with the car. If the dealership (or any shop) hasn't seen an RX-7 in years, you have a better chance getting it back on the road then they do because you'll actually care to see it run. ;)

Start with a compression test. It will cost you about $65 for a shop to do it, but that will give you an idea on your engine's health.

I had to tow my car about 130 miles for a Reliable Rebuild. I would suggest the same to you! California's not too far away to save money, Get a reliable build and the peace of mind knowing your car's being taken care of.
