Im sure some of you have done this before and i was wondering about how much it would cost?

When I bought the parts 2 years ago from Malloy Mazda, it ran about $510 for the six bearings, input shaft brg, five synchros, large and small nut, throwout brg, pilot brg and seal.

I bought a kit from a transmittion parts place .It had all the rings and the ball bearing sets plus gaskets and some of the rollerbearings .I bought the other rollers and races from the Mazda dealer .The total cost came to $ 500 .I took time to reclearance some of the spacing for tighter shifting which took more build time .This was 5 or 6 years ago so the pricing may be different now .Well I should rewrite this, I found the receit ,National Drivetrain INC. phone 773 376-9044 .This was in 1999 and I am still running the tranny .

More than the cost of picking up a low-mileage used transmission.

As a forewarning, you may find some parts inside that need replaced beyond bearings/synchros/seals. With the cost of the basic rebuild parts at the price of a low-mileage used tranny, you should consider tearing down your tranny before buying the rebuilt kit. That way if you find your 2nd gear shift teeth are pretty shredded, (another $600 in parts) you can still back out and get the used tranny.

If you're paying a shop, the price of the rebuild kit is nothing compared to the labor. You'll spend a grand easy just on the rebuild.

I would definitely go the JDM tranny route then unless cost is not a factor. Go for the lowest mileage you can get.

The process is pretty straight forward. You will need to build or buy a 41mm socket. Ray has them for 100.00 or buy a Harbor Freight and cut it in half and weld on a section of pipe. There is a wonderful write up on this process here on the net. I bought a transmission to practice on before I did mine. If you were here in HVA I would be glade to help. The removal from the car and its installation is by far the most time consuming affair
